  1. White spots on tank wall

Well, another kind of white spots might be theses: Go to the hitchhiker FAQ http://www.reefs.org/hhfaq/pages/main_pages/faq_rock3.htm and search down the page for "tiny grindstones" and check out the picture to the left. I have those. They move around some, but never get larger than a tiny spot.
  2. what the hell are those little things ?

Hrm. I've seen them identified as "Staurocladia oahuensis (hydroid jellyfish)" here: http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=57778, suggested as probable hydroids here: http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=49209, scuffled over their jellyfish-ness here...
  3. New setup help

Just as an alternate opinion, I very much enjoyed curing my own liverock. Watching all the unpredictable stuff grow out of it was all the more entertaining and rewarding because I could remember scrubbing all the dead sponges and other crud off it when I brought it home. However, I don't think...
  4. spammage: new 10 gal nano ;p

Tank looks awesome. I have a question for all of you nano-keepers. A lot of these tanks have things in them that have the potential to grow like crazy. Button polyps, star polyps, shrooms, clams :D, not to mention the corals. Some stuff can be easily pruned or fragged as it gets large, I...
  5. have anyone successfull keep coral using tap water.

Apophis924, Some fair comments. However, the other thing I am wondering about is the copper pipes -- the toxic metals. I do know that copper is extremely friendly about sharing itself with everything even near it. A buddy of mine works in the R&D labs at Intel and I have heard some serious...
  6. Dune?

Hrm. From your description (picture is too dark and small), it might be a barnacle. I looked on the web for some good pictures of ones with their tentacles out, but didn't find much. There's a good drawing here: http://www.greatbay.org/kids_corner/quest/exploration/who_lives_here_rs.html And...
  7. Help Support reefs.org and wear cool stuff!

*sigh* I wish cafepress sold black t-shirts. I love that they make it so easy for folks to make/sell t-shirts and stuff; but I don't wear white t-shirts. I know, I know, white is easier and cheaper and stuff. But.....
  8. Recommend me some interesting, hardy fish and/or corals

If you're looking for a fish that won't get too big, won't bother corals, won't bother shrimp and crabs, and will swim around and add color to your tank: I've been super happy with my two-spot hogfish. He's very hardy, bright yellow, and very active. He is a bit agressive toward other fish...
  9. have anyone successfull keep coral using tap water.

I've been using conditioned tap water (I use Prime) for as long as I've been keeping aquariums. This made a lot of sense when I started, since I was keeping freshwater tanks with cichlids. Cichlids will live in all kinds of crappy water conditions; so I didn't sweat it. When I made the plunge...
  10. Weird small Starfish??

Sugar Magnolia: Nope, I know the difference between "baby brittle stars" and asterina and I was pretty sure I'd seen asterina listed as part of cleanup crews for sale. However, when I went looking on several of the major online retailers' sites, I didn't see anything. So, it is possible I was...
  11. Stop the insannity!

I'm with you spsmike. I don't do a lot of rearranging, but I still spend a fari amount of time with my hands in the tank. Mostly spot feeding, oh, yeah and glass cleaning. I've been doing this for seven years and I still haven't made the leap to a magnet style scraper.
  12. Weird small Starfish??

Is this true? Tons of places sell these guys as part of clean-up crews and I've had tons of them in my tank(s) for ages and have not noticed any harm to my soft corals.
  13. Eggs(?) on the tank glass.

Wouldn't snail eggs hatch out little swimmer-type guys, not little snails complete with shells? I mean, I can't argue with you about the shape, I see what you're saying. And, as far as I know, I really don't have anything else in my tank that's a likely candidate for breeding by laying eggs on...
  14. Eggs(?) on the tank glass.

Hrm. Actually, it's just a Nikon Coolpix 885. So, a few years old and 3x optical macro. The trick is to hold really still. Even better is to have a tripod.
  15. Eggs(?) on the tank glass.

Howdy. So, several weeks ago I noticed some clear egg-looking things on my tank glass. I was meaning to take a picture and sort of put it off. Then I noticed that the specks inside were multiplying, which seemed odd in eggs. So, I snapped a couple of shots. Both of these are from up right...
