  1. lighting for fuge

I assume you're trying to grow Chaeto or another macro in there? If so, I would just slap an inexpensive compact fluorescent fixture up there with daylight (6700k- 10000K) bulbs. Just keep in mind that macros are green plants, and thus prefer daylight bulbs over actinic. An inexpensive hood...
  2. Covering the tank for jawfish

Haha, I found the ultimate solution after I started this thread...another tank! I purchased a 24-gallon Aquapod nano tank for my jawfish. Harry Houdini (or David Blane) couldn't escape from the thing...it's sealed tight all the way around. Should have seen the look on my girlfriend's face...
  3. Chaeto question

This probably isn't it, but when did you last change the bulbs?
  4. Red Green Jawfish (New fish?!?!)

From a Jawfish expert I contacted: He went on to give me some nice detailed info, but says he is developing a manuscript for a jawfish book, so I'll avoid publishing his words. Anyway, I'm excited. I mean...I would have been slightly more excited if he said "holy crap, I've never see THAT...
  5. Red Green Jawfish (New fish?!?!)

How about "Cheney's Jawfish"? He's doing well in the tank right now. He commenced jawfish-type activities almost immediately and has been digging tunnels and such for the last few days. Feeding well too.
  6. Red Green Jawfish (New fish?!?!)

Thanks. I'm actually using a type of mesh fishing net to cover all open spaces. Gives coverage while allowing gas exchange.
  7. Red Green Jawfish (New fish?!?!)

I purchased this badboy at the LFS yesterday. My fish guy at the LFS is extremely knowledgeable: he could find no scientific name or reference of any kind to this fish anywhere on the web. Neither could I. He said the fish came in an order from Bali. It came with several extremely large and...
  8. Super Rare Jawfish and the Aggressive Algae Blenny

I was in the LFS today and saw one of the most striking fish I've ever seen. The LFS called it a "green sided jawfish." He explained that he'd done a detailed web search and found absolutely no literature on the fish - not even a scientific name. It was, in fact, a jaw fish - except it was...
  9. Covering the tank for jawfish

What do people think about fish netting: http://allwatersfishing.com/product_info.php?products_id=9718 I realize that gas exchange is the main concern, but the nylon is very thin and I don't think gas exchange is a problem. The main advantage of netting is that it can provide an ultra tight...
  10. Copper killing everything?

Unfortunately, the news is grim: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/curemovalfaqs.htm http://www.wetwebmedia.com/curemovalfaq2.htm It doesn't seem like the mere presence of copper is always the kiss of death. There is a big difference, for instance, between accidentally allowing some copper-treated...
  11. Covering the tank for jawfish

I've been thinking about using some sort of netting. That would maximize airflow while giving the "tightest" fit.
  12. Stain to match stand

I stained my stand with a dark lacquer, then cut from a sheet of self-adhesive wood grain from the hardware store to go over the old wood grain tape along the top and bottom edges of the tank. The adhesive wood-grain I used is kind of like this, only much cheaper (from Ace hardware)...
  13. Rethinking my re-setup plans

What if you did everything in your plan except the 100% water change? If you're careful, you should be able to clean the tank using a siphon and small water changes in the next weeks. I can understand why you'd want to change all of the water...but considering the problems it would create...
  14. Jawfish Groups

Does anyone out there have experience keeping groups of jawfish? I'm interested in making a trio a jawfish of my 46G bowfront. Generally speaking, how much space would three jawfish need to dig their burrows? For example, if I provide a 6-8 inch DSB in half the tank is that enough space?
  15. Covering the tank for jawfish

Ahh yes. And readily available at home depot. Thanks. Or I could just wrap the tank in plastic wrap each night.
