  1. plans for a DIY skimmer for my 90?

A tall counter current skimmer would be effective and inexpensive to build from pvc. The basic idea is described and illistrated in The Reef Aquarium VOL.1 (Delbeek and Sprung) I'll be building one myself soon, I estimate it will cost about $40-$45. 6' tall 4" diam.
  2. Reef Setup almost done...

Very nice setup. As for the return pump, I would personally opt to keep it simple and return to both tanks with the same pump using ball valves to regulate flow. Less electricity, Less to maintain.
  3. Time for an upgrade

Thats a very nice looking sump. but probably a bit pricey. Why not buy an appropriatly sized glass tank, baffle it yourself, then take it to your lfs an have it drilled?
  4. New 55gal Saltwater tank

You will not need the bio wheels provided you have enough live rock for biological filtration, about 1 1/2 lbs. per gal. (more or less depending on bio load) If you dont have enough live rock to start with, the bio-wheels will be fine in a fish only aquarium. As mentioned above, get a good...
  5. Retro-fitting an AGA oak hood

Thanks for the advice. I was concernen about the halides being too close. I'll probably take the hood to a cabinet maker friend of mine and have it made taller. He whould have a much better chance of matching the finish than me. As for the UV shield will any type of clear glass work? :?:
  6. Retro-fitting an AGA oak hood

Has anyone retro-fitted an AGA oak hood for metal halide? I'm planning to set my 75 back up in the near future, i'll be moving up from a low light softie tank to a sps & clam tank. So I'll be removing the two NO double strip lights and the glass tops. Here are my questions: The inside of the...
  7. Alright..im sure this stuff has to get boring to you guys...

Ive been using a three stage (1 mic. pre filter, carbon , R.O.) for 3 years, havn't had any problems. I personally don't think a D.I. stage is needed. But then, my water only reads 40 ppm on my tds meter out of the tap.
  8. Addatives?

If you use a two part calcium/buffer such as B IONIC, you can keep it simple because you won't need any other additives. Except maybe iodine, but that is a subject of much debate. If you have a large system, you might want to consider a calcium reactor in the future. They are expensive to set...

  11. The best source for diy metal halide?

Can any one tell me the best online source for DIY metal halide compnents? I planning on installing 2-150 watt, 10,000K double end lamps in my 48"x18" AGA oak canopy. I choose this type of lamp because of thier lower profile. I only have a little over 6" to the water surface. I would prefer...
  12. sandsifters, yes or no?

I am in the planning stage of setting up my 75 gal. reef again. There will be a 50 gal. basement sump with a 4" DSB, using oolitic sand. It will be seeded with live sand and detritivore kits, and No sand sifters The main tank will have 1-2" seaflour special grade reef sand, with sand...
  13. Southdown sand

This was a hot topic a couple of years back. After reading much discussion about it, and Rob Toonen's analysis of particle size, I went to my local Home Depot and bought a few bags. I havn't thought about it since. The other day I was at H.D. browsing the garden dept. and saw a skid of S.D...
