  1. How much

I'm surprised that a first order would be anything less than the best they could pick out. As Raskal mentioned, they usually send you really nice pieces for the first order or two and don't start to sneak in the less impressive pieces until a few orders in.
  2. New to the forum!

Awww, so exciting! Welcome to your new hobby, and welcome to the forums. Great bunch of folks here, and a good source of information.
  3. Buying Used Tank - What to Look For??

Anemonebuff, my experience is the same as yours regarding copper, only I did it to myself before I knew any better. When I was a younger and less experienced lad, I had a fish only tank that I ran copper in several times over a period of a year. I then decided I wanted to keep inverts and...
  4. Red Sea Max 130D vs. JBJ Nano Cube

I'm not sure if there is some sort of aftermarket retrofit available or not, I know there are a lot of folks doing that sort of thing but that isn't something I've ever dealt with. I can tell you that we are keeping soft corals and LPS corals which are growing and thriving in ours under power...
  5. The nautilus

    Agree completely.
  6. Red Sea Max 130D vs. JBJ Nano Cube

We have had a Red Sea Max (the original version not the D)set up here in the office for about a year and a half. I can't compare it to the Nano since I haven't had a Nano set up to work with, but I can say that the Red Sea Max has been just fine and everything in it is thriving. I've been quite...
  7. The nautilus

Unfortunate that they would eat small fish/inverts put into a tank with them, since the chilled water would lend itself well to something like Catalina gobies as tank mates. However, it is my understanding that they would have a good probability of becoming Catalina snacks. Either way, it is...
  8. Power outtage for 4 hours and counting

Sorry to hear about the power outage, that is always a pain in the behind. Last summer after my mom and dad were without power at their house for over a week following a wind storm my dad bought a really nice little Honda generator. I have often thought when I set up a large tank at home again...
  9. If Hitler or AEFW make you uncomfortable, don't click

I've never seen that before, and I've got to say that is by far one of the funniest industry related things I have ever seen. I couldn't stop laughing. Thanks for sharing.
  10. led lighting

I generally don't recommend LED lighting for SPS corals, but it could be that there are new fixtures on the market that I haven't seen yet and that the company I work for doesn't carry. I generally recommend the higher end LED lighting fixtures for LPS and soft corals/zoanthids, etc. and they...
  11. New York Times article about saltwater aquariums

There are so many stories those of us who have worked in brick and mortar and online pet retail could tell. I'm sure I am not the only one with 15 years or longer of sometimes funny and sometimes horrifying stories to tell. I will just say that it is really important for those of us working in...
  12. Coral Shading

    Bonsai coral? :) 8)
  13. Fish sitting.

I like the idea of portioning out the food for a sitter in advance as mentioned above, especially if your clowns are only being given flake food while you are gone. You could use one of those pill organizers like people who have daily medications to take. Each little compartment has its own lid...
  14. aquarium background options?

I tend to just paint outside of the back of the aquarium when that is an option. It gives a perfect background with no bubbles or gaps, and it doesn't come off unless you want to take a razor blade to it. The acrylic idea doesn't sound like a bad one, but to me it sounds like extra work and time...
  15. Fish sitting.

If your local fish store won't do it, see if there are any reputable tank maintenance guys in your area who might do it for you. They often will have holding facilities at their place to hold fish short term. Be aware that anyone who is taking them from you to watch them for you may require you...
