Welcome back!
I also have been gone for about the same time…. I’m now plan my triumphant return!
I don’t think much has changed but if I can recommend anything If you haven’t already seen the GARF site then please take a look. http://www.garf.org/index.shtml
I won’t be back in the good old...
Good information... I have yet to purchase my RO unit but this will be done before I set up my tank. I have been out of the hobby for 10 years and always said if I ever do it again this is a must have piece of equipment.
I’m a little confused on the stages everyone is talking about can someone...
SALT in Rock Mix
I have tried using rock salt in the mix like others have been posting for a whole, one thing to consider is that concrete and salt are mortal enemies. I was told by a professional concrete worker that mixing salt will weaken the mix but the damage would be localized where the...
If you must have a frame then maybe you can have one made from wood that’s what I used on my previous tank builds.
Support the tank with glass then make a decorative wood frame.
Not sure what your big plan was but you do know that a frame is not needed at all.
You do need to glue glass supports in place, I’m sure someone will chime in and agree. Most tanks in Europe don't even have a frame it's just bare glass.
THALES Why 10'?
gOOD INFO ALL
wHAT ABOUT TANK HEIGHT (damn caps lock) Deeper tanks look nice but the issue with getting good light penetration could work against me. I’ve been thinking not more than 24 inches high but go at least 36 inches deep… probably larger most likely 48 inches.
I’m going...
I'm an aircraft Mechanic so we use fiber optics in our work, I got my first fiber optic taste about 20 years ago and immediately thought it would be nice for an aquarium.
Not at the moment... I will add this into the cost of building the house.
The big plan to get the basic design and room done then spend the next year working out the details. While this is going on I'll start growing most of the corals and getting the home made LR cured in the other tanks...
Light spectrum
The unit of measure commonly used to describe LED intensity is the millicandela (mcd), How does this compare to the hobby when we commonly see light spectrum 6000-10000k ?
I had an idea of using fiber optics and using direct sunlight or at least moving the hot bulbs away from your tank and piping the light in with the fiber optics.
OK basic idea is to take let’s say a MH bulb and build a housing around it and plug fiber optics cord into the housing all around the...
I’ve been thinking of LEDs for a few years now, I really think this can be done right it just may take time. It’s like the flat screen TVs when they first came they cost more than a Ford focus and now everyone has one.
Another crazy SOB with big ideas
I like doing most things myself and plan building the next tank, the below idea just came to me who knows if it’s good or not.
As for the next tank I really like large salt and reef tanks (300 – 700 gal) and would like to get your opinions on what...
Let’s just say you could build a large well reef tank with the bottom in the shape of a funnel. Inside the aquarium the bottom is supported with something like egg crate but not breakable and very strong. This being said it should be apparent that we do not have any substrate. Now what I want...
Ok, I’ve looked around a bit and i guess this place will have to do. I’m not left with much of a choice I’m too lazy to search for another forum and this place has what I need…
I really did like the other forum though…. hahahahahaha
