  1. Weekly Discussion - Shopping at large chain stores

Well, OK. I'm guilty of generalizing here. The point I was trying to make is that we were all nieve once. We, as responsible reef keepers (or keepers of any other animals for that matter) should take into account where our info comes from. Chances are that that kid at the store has a genuine...
  2. Weekly Discussion - Shopping at large chain stores

IMO, Len, there is no "other side of the glass" in this hobby. "Cheaper" prices are about all you can hope for from one of these chain stores. The PetCo in my area stocks a lot of captive bred SW fish (clowns, dottybacks, etc.) but their tanks are so bad that unless you're there right when they...
  3. Check in please: SCUBA divers

NAUI Since '96. I must admitt, I'm suprised to see so many NAUI divers posting here! It seems like PADI is all you ever hear about. Anyway, I just finished my Advanced course last fall. Places I've dove; the Keys, St. Thomas, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Norfolk Lake, Bull Shoals (salvage). Can't wait...
  4. CPR bakpak 2 question, maybe a problem.

Hey Enzo, be careful with that sponge. I took mine completly out b/c small air bubbles were getting cought under it, eventually leading to one big bubble that restricted too much water. Came home to my skimmer pumpming water all over the floor one night! Since taking the sponge out, I haven't...
  5. Help, PC's or VHO's

Last week I would've recommended VHO's, but I just replaced my 55W CSL actinic with a 65W CSL Super Actinic and am quite impressed! It is much bluer than my other one ever was, so I might be leaning back towards PC, since they tend to last longer. Just my opinion! :D -Troy
  6. staghorn hermit crabs

FWIW, a LFS got one in a while back and on the next day, it changed shells! :? -Troy
  7. Here's an interesting macroalga

Wow, that's an interesting macro that I haven't seen before! Nice pic :D
  8. Best way to transfer Ricordea to another rock?

So is ricordea as easy to propagate as any other mushroom?
  9. Hypothetically speaking...

My two cents.... Go with 2 250 MH, 10K or 6.5K, supplement as needed. Put these in a custom built pendant style fixture hanging over the tank to minimize heat transfer. Or use those cool HQI MH pendants. Pricy, but this is hypothetical, Right? -Troy
  10. Mushrooms keep dying..

I know that when I switched from NO flourescent lights to 2x55 PC's, my shrooms hated it and are never as big as they once were. I don't mind though, as mine were getting out of control. You already have yours on the bottom of the tnk, but are they in direct light? Try moving them around a bit...
  11. pH too high

    OOPS! I meant 8.4/night, 8.6/day!
  12. Your success rate w/ SPS coral & clams under PC lighting

Welcome reefnutz! FWIW, I have PC's on my 38, and had good luck with my first clam (t. deresa). However, my second clam (t. maxima) did not fare so well; died on the 2nd day :( . I blame myself for this though, I don't think that I acclimated him properly. Also, there is a guy at my LFS that...
  13. pH too high

OK, I added too much Marine Buffer a couple of weeks ago. My pH is riding at about 8.4/day, 8.6+/night. Corals seem alright, but aren't all open at the same time. I want to bring the pH down a bit, but I don't have any Marine Unbuffer  . Will vinager work, or what should I use? I've never...
  14. southdown in MO?

Hey MarkyMarklar, I'm from NE KS and haven't found any in the Topeka/Lawrence area. Haven't made it to KC yet, but my bet is that there's none there. My understanding is that thety just don't ship it this way. I'm going to try to order some online from CoralDynamics. $9/ bag, about $18 shipping...
  15. Begginer New setup help

IMO, I like the direction you're taking, but I would ax the canister filter. No need for one on a reef tank. My other concern would be lighting, which you didn't mention. While none of the inverts you mentioned need really high light, you should consider a good lighting system (PC's, or better...
