ARID is an acronym for algae remediation illuminated device. It uses macroalgae as a medium to capture and export excess phosphate and carbon from your reef. It also has benefits of stabilizing the 24 hr Ph swing by using it on reverse daylight cycle. The action of photosynthesis also increases dissolved oxygen levels. Higher DO than can be attained by air injection by a skimmer. A skimmer can only put the oxygen levels equal to the room air where it is pulling from, also skimmers will be adding the elevated CO2 levels found indoors into your tank.
The ARID does require a chemical addition of our Nitrate solution and Iron manganese to keep nitrate elevated so the algae can continue to consume phosphate. For more information please see our forum under vendors.

so this is basically an algae turf scrubber but without the turf? am I correct? if so what is the benefit of these units over an algae turf scrubber? what is the power consumption? what type of bulb does it use? flow? my system is 105 G with 29 g sump. Please advise.

Its basically a refugium reactor , uses a simple led strip down tbe center , combines the benefits of a refugium with the benefits of a reactor and the benefits of a turf scrubber
So you get the macros from your fuge , the constand fluidized reaction from a reactor and the constant and full coverage of lighting on all sides simmilar to a turf scrubber

Seems like a great product but in my opinion ridiculously overpriced there was a previous thread trying to sell them for like 700$ or some crazy number like that

My question is, can you grow hair algae in this device (assuming the placement of a turf of some kind)? or does it grow Chaeto macro only? from what I have read hair algae is like 10-20X more efficient than any macro in No3 and Po4 uptake. http://www.algalturfscrubber.com/biomass.htm

Lastly, can i make a suggestion? If i have to get into a reactor (any reactor) every 7-14 days and have 5-7 thumb screws to twist off, "it aint happening". Thumb screws are a thing of the past and almost all new reactors now a days are twist top style and quick and easy access. Ie: TLF 150 & 550 and most good protein skimmers out there.

i've been using a prototype for half a year and the thumb screws are a non-issue. i clean the cheato weekly btw. overall its still much faster than maintaining a combination of skimmer, gfo and water changes. other than the occassional water change (less frequent) i dont do any maintainance!

Just a quick reply,

1. Flow rate - 250-350 GPH (maxi jet 1200)

2. MSRP - $350.00

3. There is no "bulb" it is a combination of different kelvin LEDS wrapped around a heatsink to maintain material integrity and not add any additional heat to system.

4. Please read our previous post, it is not a refugium or a turf scrubber.

Thumb screws are a PITA. you've only been using it 6 months. wait until some salt creep gets in the threads and head. also if you don't tighten them evenly they will leak. if a small pebble gets between the gasket and the plate, you've got a leak. twist tops solve all of these issues. Not saying that your unit will do this, just speaking from 15 years exp. I've seen my fair share of thumb screw gasket lids.

My skimmer has a cleaning head and I have it connected to a 2.5g skimmate collector, i dont touch it for months and months at a time. GFO sucks I agree but I use a cup in an overflow sock so in and out is a breeze. as for water changes... I'm not sure what type of corals you keep but i would doubt that long term health of any coral with little water change and its effects would be beneficial to any animal including fish. Even if you have money to burn, you couldn't possible dose all of the major and minor trace elements found in a good salt mix. and I am of the thinking that if you cant test for it dont dose it. YMMV

Follow up ???:

1. what is the wattage of the LED's?
2. Type (cree or other)?
3. and what is the kelvin?
4. is the unit limited to growing chaeto only? or can I grow hair algae with the use of a turf?
