was there and I saw the corals...

However, no frags offered of the colonies. its a shame I would have purchased one of each.

If you want some nice $250 colonies and want to risk it. Id say go for it. they have nice tables and colors in. Most of the rest of us want to watch the coral grow out though and wont risk that much cash just to see it RTN or turn brown.

You are right... I'm sure he would have if I asked. However I don't feel like asking every time I go. I miss the days that I xcould walk in and shop frags all day long. Nelson for sure would have done so, you are right.

for real its like every shop wants to sell colonies
would be nice to walk in and see a bunch of frags

When I went they wouldn't cut frags. I wouldn't even ask if I went there again which probably won't happen anyway. When I asked I got the stink eye and was very uncomfortable.

oh dang, thats not cool. Do you no who you asked? did you hear any name of the employee ? maybe it was the guy that doesnt frag? i no nelson Frags.

Selling a fresh frag isn't idea anyways. Most places frag up a colony and give it at least a week to heal and start to grow. I can see losing a colony cutting a frag or two a day off of it and never letting it heal properly.

buying Fresh Frags is not really anything to worry about. i buy fresh frags allot from other LFS, lost a few pieces but due to the tank at home. cause you never know with mari acros, some come and go and come back weird. lol

I think some folks here are missing the point. when a store sets up a dedicated frag system. They take into account what the cost vs profit vs risk that they take.

There has been plenty of times where nelson fragged stuff for me and let me tell you these guys are really cool to deal with. However when they do I usually pay twice as much on a frag as most other places that have frags set up.

The whole idea here is that your customer is getting a small piece as the least expensive price yet allowing you to make a profit when you sell a min. break point. The thing is when a store has volume (and they do) there is not issue in selling min.

How many colonies do you see at max reef that has browned out because no one has purchased it?

Are you seeing that number increase?

This is what causes any store to have to sell later corals for more. sure they should sell some colonies. sometimes you want a colony. but when it comes to SPS i would bet 9x out of 10 most want to see it grow.

a properly set up frag system will allow someone to come in and purchase frag packs... get a slight discount or incentive for buying say 5 and get 6th free. They clear the racks and everyone wins.

Lets face it $20 and up frags are expensive for a frag. it better be a sought after genus beyond $20. This is what i see set up in many stores. Check out absolutly fish in clifton NJ. They have a similar setup where you buy $100 in frags you get one free. They cant keep thier frags on the racks long enough.

If you are lucky enough as a store to have enough customers that will walk in and buy colonies at $250 each. Than yeah skip frags. If colonies are starting to backlog and turn brown and you find that you have whole tank filled with colonies no one would buy... Its time to rethink what you are doing.

Buying fresh frags is always a concern. They don't recover well in a new system, that's why you lose them at home.

have to agree with rob here... if your system is new than you shouldn't be buying frags or sps for that matter.

I actually take most of the plugs that come off the frags off and glue the frag directly to my rock. so if this saves me a couple of bucks for a store to sell me a frag without a plug, i'm for it.

A frag off of a plug is very different than a fresh cut frag. When removing the frag from a plug it has already healed most likely and has its slime coat built back up. This is not the same as a fresh cut frag off of a colony. But what do I know, I have only been fragging SPS since 1994.
