MY POINT, boys and girls was that I was agreeing with the other poster in that the added distance of 20 more minutes makes it a PITA. Impossible to get to? NOPE... am I going to go to the new store.... mnnnn yeah once in a while...sure but no where near as much as I used to go before. Why? cause new location is more of a PITA and I have other choices at 40-50 minute distances. Max Reef missed the point that he had people that came from CT and North NY (evident by this post) and he was it in this area, moving further south puts him amoung other store competition. Will that work in his favor? only time will tell.
So here is what I'm going to do the next time I go to The new max reef. I'm going to hit all the other stores in that area if I'm already venturing further. I would bet others will do the same too.
In the 16 years I've been in the hobby I've seen my share of great coral stores close. Sal's NY Aquaria for one. Others moved out of the area. However, I can guarantee that someone else will open a new store to fill that void. If their buisness model is to be competative they will do well in this area. Where there is a market demand someone will move in to fill that demand. its just science.
Coralcruze, was that NY Aquaria on Mamaroneck ave. I used to live in the Bronx and visit that place. Better yet I moved to Rye Neck to be 5 min from him. Than the placed closed. That hurt and it was a good store when first open. Once again Westchester has lost it's only fish store. But the drive isn't far for me. But I hear you about used to make weekly visits. It's hard to believe that Westchester at one point had a few places where now there nothing. It just shows you with high rent and over head how much profit can you make in a hobby like this.

There is still a couple in Yonkers, Elmsford (?), Armonk, Bedford Hills...maybe a couple more that I'm not aware of...
NYA and old 'exotic pet warehouse' in Yonkers, Jawz in Elmsford, Complete Aquarium in Bedford Hills (same pricing as Greenwich) and Haaki in Armonk... Pete's place in Hartsdale (never been there)... Any more?
True. However, most of those other stores mentioned can't remotely compare on economics and variety of livestock. EPW in Yonkers isn't remotely worthwhile for SW though their freshwater stuff is decent. I haven't been to Jawz so can't comment there. I'll certainly agree on the sentiment with that Bedford Hills store. Greenwich Aquaria is quite good when they throw off a sale, which are presented with good frequency, and their displays are incredible (though they're rebuilding the large one as of a week or so ago). House of Fins consolidated and are mostly SW now. The new display tank is impressive though needs some seasoning (snorkel gear required for that puppy). The Coral Reef in Stratford is definitely well worth the drive for you NY folks (turnabout is fair play for hoarding Maximum all these years!!). Frags galore.
All said, I live in Norwalk and won't drop my frequency of trips to Ralph's awesome joint. Thanks for keeping the lights on and feeding our reef addictions. Although now I need to find a place to replace chicken parms from Carlo's!!!
