I thought they was staying open in Yonkers ? Damn that sucks

Yup.. it doed. I personally think that they used to service folks like me from north westchester where there is no other store to go to. I think they missed that point. However, in the end they chose to go where all of the competition is. I'm currently back to hitting decent CT stores.

Hey "the coral reef llc" is not too far from you and a great store with awesome frags and great prices. a bit of a drive for me though :(

Honestly if you drive is just 15 minutes or so from the old store
they didn't move to California
they moved relatively in the same borough

MY POINT, boys and girls was that I was agreeing with the other poster in that the added distance of 20 more minutes makes it a PITA. Impossible to get to? NOPE... am I going to go to the new store.... mnnnn yeah once in a while...sure but no where near as much as I used to go before. Why? cause new location is more of a PITA and I have other choices at 40-50 minute distances. Max Reef missed the point that he had people that came from CT and North NY (evident by this post) and he was it in this area, moving further south puts him amoung other store competition. Will that work in his favor? only time will tell.

So here is what I'm going to do the next time I go to The new max reef. I'm going to hit all the other stores in that area if I'm already venturing further. I would bet others will do the same too.

In the 16 years I've been in the hobby I've seen my share of great coral stores close. Sal's NY Aquaria for one. Others moved out of the area. However, I can guarantee that someone else will open a new store to fill that void. If their buisness model is to be competative they will do well in this area. Where there is a market demand someone will move in to fill that demand. its just science.

I cant speak for anyone else but for me its not about distance but more about travel time. Coasting on 95/75MPH in straight-away is quite different than zig-zaging across town.

I just did a comparison of travel time from me to Absolutely fish and to new store. They are both just about the same "travel time" from me. However Absolutely fish is further distance wise. So how many times have I gone to Absolutely fish this year??? ZERO. I think I went once last year. Am I going to go again? Yeah, maybe next year lol.

please let me know what other stores you know located in the bronx
I don't know any other store around here.. besides PETLAND
:lol2:

where did I say that it had to be in the bronx brother???
here is what I meant... zoom in to see http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/nyc-store-ratings/

Old location = no competition around
New location = quite a few others within 20 minutes.

Ralph made a buisness decision. I get it. The bronx store is bigger and probably the same or less to rent out. MY POINT again is its all about location...location...location...

and again... its science not voodoo.

Actually it maybe further for you but for a lot of people it's much closer, plus the 6 train stop right by the place.

The distance between the new store and the old store doesn't really have much impact on competition, as all these places were already the competition, and moving 7 miles or so south didn't change that one bit.

OK, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I can respect that but right now the above is theory. Lets see if the new location will hold.

However, i do remember that when max reef came into Yonkers from Mt. Vernon (man I loved that location) It did very much have a bearing on the local competition. I can think of two places that Max reef put out of buis. and one other that's been struggling since. So again I beg to differ that moving closer to competition and LOCATION doesn't matter. It most certainly does IMHO.

It's not like they're moving right across the street from the competition, the distance is pretty much the same, but for a lot of people it's actually a lot easier to get to now, so if anything it may hurt the other stores, as now people will go there more than before. Your theory just doesn't make much sense, outside of it being hardier for you to get to it's a lot easier for a lot more people.
