The Opah is the worlds first discovery of a warm-blooded fish in existence. This ?Tire Sized? fish is silver in color and due to its body temperature it can swim faster than a similar sized cold-blooded fish at depths of 400 meters. Most fish are exotherms and gather their body temperature from the sun and surrounding water. The Opah (lampris guttatus) is an endotherm which allows it to create and hold its own heat. This endotherm fish can keep its body temperature stable as it dives to depths of 1300 feet!

My cousin caught this about 7 years ago in Croatia in the Adriatic sea in one of his nets. Looks very similar to the above fish.

I remember that morning. They called me to quickly come see what they caught. It was amazing fish to see in person. They called some specialist to come in and find out what species it is they call it "Nevjesta" in croatian means like Fiance in translation, It ended up in a museum over there. Very cool. I got some more pics somewhere in Croatia. The whole village was taking pics.

if all that is true, your cousin should try to see if he can be credited with first catching it.

Please note that this is not a new fish. This is fish is a has been around in recreational and commercial fishing for probably hundreds of years. New studies have just shown that it is warm blooded.

Jlavine 100%. This fish didn't just sprout up in existence haha. This is just a study that recently proved the are infact warm blooded due to the nature of the gill analysis they did. Very interesting read.
