I shot all these images w/ a Canon T3i & a Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens. I had just gotten the lens and decided to try it out. It is the wrong lens but here were the results....
I had to use shutterfly.com to upload these pic which took away a lot of the quality of the shots.

I am looking at a Canon T3i now and there is the option to buy the Canon Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens is it worth it for the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens? I know that the IS is a nice feature as is the glass but since the corals 'move' would it really be worth double the price?

I thought image stabilization (IS) was to help with vibrations caused by you holding the camera and pressing the trigger... If you have a tripod (which is my next purchase) for macros then an additional $500 for the IS feature isn't worth it. I'd rather take that money and buy a different lens. JMO. If you have the money then go for it. I don't, though :D

you'd be surprised at how well alot of lower end cameras can perform. Those photos are nice but to be honest most of them are out of focus. So i doubt a macro lens was used. Ive used canon and nikon right now im all about my sony nexx7 with the kit lens. Key to good photos are good lighting and camera settings. Dont worry so much about post processing software and expensive equipment... Unless thats ur thing. But not needed to take good photos. Master camera settings. Then invest in equiptment as needed.

So I am going to build a top down box for the camera so I can get the lens below the water surface. What do you think about incorporating a flash ring into the box? Good idea/bad idea? If good which one to get I hear Sigma ttl ring flash is good but know nothing about them. Or would it be better to make my own and use different color leds like blue/white or full spectrum?

Top down box... no flash... shoot in raw... have whites on when you are shooting.
speed anything around 1/100 is fine... if you can also adjust white balance prior underwater even better.
