Dead sand

i think the biggest issue with cleaning this sand though was that it was stored outside and god knows what could have gotten into it

Sell that stuff for 20-40 since there are so many brave reefers out there. Just make sure to let them know the deal with the sand.

...+1...have cleaned and re-used sand many, many times in the past 25+years, without problems!...

Yep!!!

Just put sand in a bucket of salt water and let it cycle. Make sure temp is correct and put in a power head. When 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite it is cycled and can be used.

Now you, can put in a tub and vacuum out sludge. I would do that...
