Maybe cooking it in a muriatic acid bath would be faster and cheaper.

Agree!! It is all up to the OP.;) I didn't say the sand (my old SouthDown DSB was dumped).lol
I only worked on the rock. I had over 200lbs. of lr between my lr, and my gf's lr. I wasn't about to throw all that lr (all purchased at LFS) of which was a lot of Fiji & Tonga. It really wasn't all that much hard work.;) Fill the bin with the lr & newly made ro/di water, place a pump & a heater in the bin. Once the ro/di had made enough water place all the rock in a clean bin with pump & heater. Repeat how ever many times to get the trates down to 0, and all of the detritus out.
Much more difficult to do in an aquarium.:type:

Weico.., I would do the same to rock I'd purchase from anyone. Who's to know what's in those rocks.
Not only tanks set up with tap water get the nasty s in to the lr.:(
