Salt Reef crystal

Anyone uses instant ocean reef crystal ? what do you like best? Any opinion advice. What about saltwater already mixed sold in lfs stores are they good to buy or mix your own ?

Fish Only of reef?

For reef I used Redsea coral pro for a long time great salt.. I decided one day to use Tropic Marin Pro and also like it. Only difference that I noticed is Tropic Marin Dissolves much faster. I always mix my own salt water with RODI water. Each salt has different amounts of trance elements. Redsea is good Tropic Marin is good. Lots of people rave about ESV but I cannot provide any input as I never used it.

Buying already mix is going to be more expensive. Unless you don't have an Ro/DI unit that would be better. But it's how much you have to buy is gets costly. Top brands I would say H2o , ESV, tropic Marin , REd Sea, Salinity, are good.

I dont have ro/di water. I have a filter attached to my tap wate.r will there be a problem for mix salt with my tap water ? And were do u install a ro/di unit

Hey frankie you have been making alot of threads lately and threads that can be easily answered in a quick search on MR or a google search. You can even order a couple Reef Aquarium book online which would be your best thing you can do for yourself. I know this site is for learning and my advise to you is to read read and read some more.

Depends what kind of filter you have. Is it a reverse osmosis? If so you can tee off and add a DI Canister to filter out TDS which you typically want in your drinking water but will be harmful to your corals and long term success. If you only have a sediment filter then it's not enough. If you get the right pieces you can supplement or replace your drinking water filter with one that can do both. Take a look at the RO/DI section on bulkreefsupply.com and you can see the different configurations and the drinking water kits, you might recognize which components you already have.

Thank you guys. And I'm reading and researching a lot of info and what good books on reefs ? I'm reading the new marine aquarium written by micheal palletta he an aquarist, animal planet saltwater aquarium, saltwater aquarium for dummies. Sorry for so many threads here, when I'm setup ill share my tank and stock how it looks. Planning slow so barr with me I like advice info opinions here if anyone feels bothered with my threads sorry. For now I'll be asking stuff, for dose who answered me thanks for your time, advice, information, opinions.

Im not putting ya down or anything but there are ALOT of opinions on here and for a new guy there are some opinions that are good and some that are bad and since your new you wont be able to make that decision. Pick up a robert shimek book he is always a great read. If you have a question write it down then do a search on MR with the keyword and im sure you can get many ideas from that as well

That why I'm planning slow not rushing into hobby. I bin freshwater hobbyist for 15 years and started slow, my reading books while I was in hobby taught me alot. Happy reefing

I started about 6 years ago and still love it. I have a 90 gallon mixed reef tank.

Thanks tranquil201 I planning on mixed reef. 48 inches long for a 150 gallon tank being tall not good to have 72 inches long is to long were I want to put it 120 gallon is it long ? I plan to have yellow tang blue rang clown fish angelfish I know bigger the better on tanks. Now my tank planning is changing, lol slow setup

I have a 90 and its 48X24X18 150 is normally taller and deeper. I have a yellow and powder brown and 2 clowns. The only angel I took a chance with was a coral beauty.. Angels are really not considered reef safe.. Meaning they may nip at corals and inverts. So be careful it's pretty much taking a 50/50 chance. Also keep in mind the size the fish you choose will grow as you don't want to have to worry about rehousing later on. You want to make sure your fish have adequate room to swim so they do not get stressed out. Essentially fish swim horizontally not vertically so actually a longer tank would be better i think at least.

I have been having some trouble with reef crystals I have switched to Red Sea Pro.

I switched over to red sea as well. But I have a quick question. I know we should mix salt with water and leave it overnight so it can aerate, but on the little book that comes with the red sea bucket it says " mix for .5 -2 hours and do not mix for more than 4 hours" anyone can advise? Thanks

I always mix overnight I have never kept track of the exact number of hours I wait till the mixture is clear. I use a mag 25 in a 55 gal drum to do the mixing. I do not use a heater so when the mag has heated the drum to the right temp is when i do the water changes. the mag give off lots of heat. not sure why they say no more then 4 hours
