Help! Ick?

Hello,

I set up a Nuvo 16 as an office tank a few months back. I have a pair of clowns and a blue devil (he's too fast for me to take him out) damsel.

Last week I added a few zoa frags but, nothing else. I went home Friday and all was well.

Today, when looking at the tank, I noticed the clows are covered in small white spots. Is it ick? If so, how'd it get into the tank?

If not, what is it? What's the best way to treat?

ich can be caused by stress also. so that means it doesn't have to transfer from another fish.

Sigh. Ich is a PARASITE, it is either in your tank or not in your tank.

Stress does not CAUSE ich, it may exacerbate it and cause it to be more noticeable, but it certainly doesn't cause it.

Ich can be introduced into a tank in different ways, most commonly through the introduction of a fish that already has the parasite, but it can also be introduced on a coral from an infected tank.

I cannot tell from the pics, but if it is in fact Ich, how do you plan to treat it?

I was surprised the spots didn't come up in the pictures. The spots are very noticeable in person. They're little white maybe yellow spots all over both clowns. I didn't notice them on the damsel at all.

I'm setting up a 10 gallon QT at home now. I was gonna treat with copper.

What would you recommend treating with?

Zoa's were dipped in bayer and revive before going into the tank. I don't think it came in with the zoas. But, how else could it have come in?

Clownfish and damsels are pretty hardy and should be able to fight ick as long as they are healthy. Just get some thera a spectrum food or any other food with garlic and they should be fine.

Just a quick update, it must have been velvet. When I came to work this morning (this is an office tank), my male was dead and my female was still alive but, lying on the sand bed.

I quickly brought her home and she's in my QT with copper.

Hope she makes it!!!

Arrgh, that's what I suspect from the pic and the scenario you described. Too bad I saw your post today or I would have suggested you to more aggressive action right from the start when you mention the words "ALL covered"

What a waste, such good looking fish you have there.

Do you have only 3 fish in the tank? If so, you need to take the remaining fish to the hospital too. About.com has a step by step procedure of treating velvet infected fish and tank.

Actually if you have no inverts or big corals in the tank yet you can treat right in the tank with cooper and then do a couple of water changes after the treatment to drop cooper levels the more you move the fish the more you stress it I never treat ick because I cant catch any of my fish they are to smart so if feed and dose garlic and selcon usually the fish will fight off ick if it is strong ick is like the flu for us it is a parisite that lives in the body and when the fish is stressed the spots show also is does not seem like it was ick with the clowns I think it was a bad case of brooknila also test your water before adding cooper
