Are you using a Fluval? I have seen stuff like that come out of the hosing before. Not sure exactly what it is though. I figured it was the type of sponge I was using in the filter. I decided to remove sponges from my system all together and never saw it again. wait and see what someone else says.

I dont have a skimmer yet my father bought the fluval because his friend recommeded it to him. I change my media on the filter today and did a 10 gallon water change the film went away. I do have a power head but its under water

I cannot help ou to ID the stuff but I saw that you have a powerhead in the system which is not breaking the surface well. You may want to point it a little upward(only a little so that it won't make a splash on your face:tongue1: ) so that the surface could break-better for aeration purpose, lighting purpose and bringing surface substance to the water column for skimming(assuming you are using intank skimmer) or for the rock to "eat" up the dirt....

HA, you updated just before I finish my post! Oh you don't have skimmer I see.

As WingoAgency said, you really do need to get a protein skimmer. Best of luck.

As suggested previously in other threads and in this thread, get a skimmer.

The problem came back this morning , I went and got the nozzle for the power head hopefully that will make it better. I havent been able to get the skimmer because of space. I will be moving to a house soon so Im waiting so I can set up my tank better there.

A skimmer is a must, it definetly looks like protein slick. I noticed that you have one of those swiveling powerheads, those are nice put they don't do much for surface aggitation. It you get another powerhead look for onw that has a nozzle that can point towards the surface of the water to give you some aggitation. For the most part that will keep the film from building up on the surface put it will not extract the extra protien from the water. That is why you need a skimmer :) Once you have a skimmer installed and running properly you will be sitting pretty! What kind of rig do you have, tank size, lighting. With some more info someone might be able to suggest a good skimmer for the job and the buck.
