Hi all,

How is everybody doing? My name is Susan and I'm new to Manhattan Reefs. I'm very interested in having a saltwater tank of my own. I've always wanted one, but I'm not sure how to start one up. Does anyone have any suggestions? :help: I think I want at least a 65-gallon tank, or at least something that is big enough to hold a lot of corals. I'm not sure about the specifics of everything else I need. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! :flower:

Welcome Hope,

Great to have another member. I could only say, at this point, reading is your first step. there are alot of good threads in the reefs for beginners forum. As well as pick the brains of our fellow members. But read first and most questions you have now can be answer. Only to bring out even more in depth and focused questions.

Welcome

pretty new here myself & the best advice I can give is just take your time and do as much research as you can before buying ANYTHING

most fish stores will tell you what you want to hear just so you buy their products, thats not to say all are like that, just need to know where to go

I wouldn't buy a tank unless it's "reef ready"
there are ways to do it without it being RR but in the long run it'll cost you
thats what I'm going through right now

the people here are great when it comes to helping out as much as they can & the response time to most posts here is very quick

good luck & welcome again

Welcome to the board Susan. One of the things about this hobby that is KEY, is patience. So, take your time, research what you want, get your equipment as your finances allow. Look for stuff that ppl sell here. I know you are new, but if you have a chance you should come to the swap tomorrow. The place where it is going to be held is closing, so I am sure you can get decent bargains there. Again, welcome and don't be shy to ask questions and participate in the discussions, and the parties, etc. Tomorrow should be fun, so come and join us

Welcome!

As stated already reading is fundamental to reefing :) It sounds silly but it's so true. I would say a good six months of studying online and reading a few good books will help form a solid reefing foundation. If you were a good student in biology and chemistry that will help. I was neither so I had to read a bit more to understand what's happening in our little enclosed systems.

this thread by leslie has some good book recommendations
http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum...-books-i-have-been-using.html?highlight=books

I would also add The Reef Aquarium: Science, Art, and Technology, Vol. 3
This is an amazingly detailed book, I could not recommend it more highly.

Ditto, Ditto, Ditto
It will also help to visit member's tanks live and ask questions of those that volunteer. Reading in a vacuum is difficult. Seeing what you read and having it explained in a way one can understand is worth my weight in gold. Unfortunately, I am thin though!! Good luck.

Hi Susan,

Welcome to MR. I live in Battery Park if you ever want to stop by and see first hand what some of the equipment looks like. It helps a lot when you are reading to actually see some of the stuff in person :)

Also, it helps if you post your location. You don't have to be detailed. I know when I was first asked for my location I was suspicious, but it is just so people know who is closest and who can help out easiest :) Just put - Manhattan, the Bronx, LI,etc....

Good luck and happy to see another girl on the boards!!!!!

Welcome Susan. Everybody above me covered reading and patience. I'd also like to add that saving up and buying good quality equipment from the beginning is another fundamental to low-stress reefing. Kind of a corrolary of patience, I guess.

Ask lots of questions here. This board is full of great people.
