Is it growing?

Hey I noticed that my candy cane coral started growing some white spots on the side. Are these new heads growing or is it some type of fungal infestation I should be worried about?

Looks like a sponge to me. Candy canes grow by splitting heads then branching off as far as I know. I could be wrong though.
