Hello, i was planning for a big water change. So I made RODI water and mixed salt in it. But unfortunately I couldn?t use all the mixed water. (Wrong estimation :banghead: ) Can I store the water for my next water change which I will be doing in 2 weeks of time. If so, are there any special precautions to be followed to store the water? Please suggest. I appreciate your help in this regard.

Thanks.

I keep extra around with a powerhead and sometimes a heater so it's up to temp if I'm going to use it soon.

I do it all the time. I mix 30 gallons at a time in a brute can and keep a powerhead and heater in there going 24/7. Sometimes I use it all for one WC but sometimes I use it for 2 or 3 water changes over the course of a month or so.

i always thought this as well but i noticed in my instructions for the Ultralith System it says it's best to get water change water in as quick as you can get it disolved and up to temp...I never figured out why, and i don't do it. Thought it was kind of weird honestly...Maybe that's another topic in itself...sorry for the tangent.

I agree that it will be fine if you keep it mixing w/ a pump. Maybe put a lid on it to keep dust and dirt out...I always find dog hair in my new water if i leave it mixing for a few days lol. It never hurt anything tho.

Hmm, what if you stored about forty gallons of RO/DI with no salt or powerhead in a Brute with the lid on??

Reason I ask is, I do this and roll the Brute in a closet for storage. No outlets in closet for powerhead.

I keep about 200 gallons of RO/DI water and 50 gallons of mixed saltwater ready at all times. In the saltwater I keep a heater and powerhead. In the RO/DI, I keep nothing. I do keep all of it covered. Never any issues.

now why would you need a powerhead and a heater to store water?? if your going to use it in a couple of weeks, why not put the powerhead adn heater in like 2 days before you plan on using it???? this is the part i never figured out :scratchch

Can someonetell me what a brute is? Appreciate it. I need to find a good option for a small NYC apartment also.

They are garbage cans made by Rubbermaid. They are thicker then regular cheap garbage cans. You can find them in Home Depot, Lowes and some smaller hardware stores. I think the smallest size is about 20 gallons, I have a 32 gallon and they make a 44 gallon. I would suggest buying the dolly for it, it's also made by Rubbermaid. It costs about the same as the Brute, but IMO, it was well worth the purchase.

Google Rubbermaid Brute:ANYWORD: .

BTW; Mine is different then the one "Masterswimmer" posted, that one has a wheels and a lid attached. It also looks a little square too. My Brute is round, the lid is seperate, removable and the wheels are seperate.

Here they are here, I guess they make them up to 55 gallons, those are the wheels I have;

I have the same question. If it's well mixed, and kept in a room temperature location (closet works for me) there's not going to be any precipitate or contamination with a lid in place. I do place a heater in and aerate with a powerhead (I use the airline attached) overnight before using it, so I'm not sure why continuous mixing and heating are needed. Can anyone clear this up?

I keep the powerhead and heater in my saltwater mixing tub because I go through a ton of saltwater. Between doing water changes and replacing water that has been taken out for bagging, I go through a lot. That's why I keep over 200 gallons of RO/DI water (unheated and no powerhead) and over 50 gallons of saltwater made at all times. My systems evaporate about 10 gallons a day.

I just need to be able to use my saltwater any day, any time. So it's always ready.

Here is another water storing question.

For most brands of salt, you should mix your water well in advance of using adding it to the tank. But in a small apartment, it is a pain to have a big bin of water sitting around. Could you mix a small amount of water at a very high salinity in order to "age" the water and then add some fresh on the day of the water change? Would it have the same benefit as mixing all of the water in adavance?

Leslie, I would say yes, mixing a high concentration of SW and then diluting it would be fine. What happens when you first put salt into the water, is that it produces a high amount of heat and becomes caustic. Allowing it to dissipate days beforehand would definitely be better than mixing it 20 minutes before using it.
