Do halide lights need to have uv filter covers on them or can you leave the bulb open to the water?
Also, setting up a 55t glass reef 36Lx15Wx24T w/integrated overflow 1"drain and 2- 1/2"returns, thinking of 10gal sump w/micron sock, Euro ES5-2 skimmer w/sedra 3500 in sump, Mag 12 for circulation, Gen-X 200w titainium heater, and for lighting 2- 36" VHOs acitic and a 250w halide mounted in center. Hood is homemade 14" high not sure if I want to leave back open do to light containment for astetic reasons. Inside tank: 60 to 70 lbs live rock and a 3" to 4" live sand bed I am thinking 1.5"coarse / screen/ 1.5 mid grade/ 1.5+or- fine live sand seeding

Does this sound like a sound plan, am I forgetting anything or should I be adding anything?

Also I have a line on a 2yr old 90 that is being broken down for house remodel. Ican purchase the inside contents of this tank includeing livestock. I was just thinking I would only want the rock and sand and try and find a home for the critters or possible recupe a bit of the cost. Is this a good idea or am I just asking for someone elses troubles. They claim the tank has been stable for 2 years and never had any dissease problems.

Oppinions welcome.

Single-ended halides don't need shielding, but double ended do. Your plan sounds great to me. I'd make sure the skimmer fits in a 10 gallon sump; a 15 gallon may be better if you can fit it. Also, I recommend you leave the back of the canopy open for venting purposes. If not, a couple of fans will do the trick; there has to be some circulation in the canopy.

As for the used tank, it's up to you if you want to take the risk. I personally prefer starting new so I know the whole history of the tank, but if it's a big savings, used may be worth the risk. I'd check the tank in person before committing to anything.

Hope my opinions help.
