I am wondering ... opinions, how many things/equiptment are safe to have plugged into one outlet?
Good idea, to have one important item like main pump in another outlet (however, may be on same circuit and trip anyway if gfci trips)? we always have someone "taking care of" the fish and dog when we are gone so better to lose power than burn down the house!
I have protein skimmer, lighting (2-96), main pump, power head, heater (200w titanium) (that's all I can think of right now). Bet I am overloaded!?

Is it Eddies? If you are around the Albany area, I'm guessing it is...

Yeah, if the outlets are on one GFCI I believe they all will trip. Thats an advantage of having the extension cord type, maybe.

I have 2 circuits in the basement for the sump (1 for return pump alone) and 1 circuit upstairs for lights etc. It still seems like a lot plugged into each one, but I guess it's ok.

yeah, Eddies. like (and respect the advice of) several of the staff in particular (even though I am certainly not very experienced - although have done my research and move cautiously) - prices seem high though. what do you think? doesn't seem to be much else comparable around.
you may be right about the advantages of the ext cord type (especially since I don't have an elaborate set up - 40 gal reef).
thanks again for your help (everybody else too!!!!!!)
