I certainly hope these types of comments do not stop you from enjoying your system. I know you have understood what I posted. I just hope these types of comments are not confusing you.

As a beginner, I'd prefer to see best practices and concrete answers. I have to disregard debates like this, since it is difficult to extract reliable information. I am not eschewing opinions, just saying that a choice between many viable, legitimate options is what I need.

As well you should. I apologize that any of this is even taking place.

I received my Salifert Calcium test kit today. I took a reading on RO, and calcium read effectively zero. I then mixed 50/50 with RO and aquarium water and I still could not get a reading.

Is it possible to have that much calcium (>500)?

Did you add a second syringe of the last reagent and see a color change?

I did not go that far. I could try that, if you think it would be helpful. I wondered if I could get the damn thing to change color...

Sometimes my ca is too high, at least according to the test kit, and I have to add more to get it to change. No big deal I think.
Your alk sound about right for that level of Ca. I wouldn't worry about either.

Don't get caught up in the numbers game and test all the time. Your tank is very young and the parameters will settle out.

It all sounds fine!

I agree with righty.

I think you will find calcium and alk will just come down on their own.

My PFO hood came today and it is enormous. I am going to have to do some clever engineering to get it installed. It has two 10K MH and two VHO actinics. The ballast for the MHs are as big as my car. :) And I drive a big car!

supergiantrobot,

I havent been on RDO alot like I use to but recently have returned =) I just wanted to say that it's great your researching and taking it slow. All to often I have seen newbies jump right in head first without doing the research or reading and end up ultmately killing livestock and sometimes quit the hobby. Good job broh!

RDO has helped me tremendously and has saved my hide a time or two when I first got started. Definately follow the direction of RDO members like Righty, ChrisRD, Seamaiden etc for they know there stuff. You cannot go wrong with there guidance and leadership. :D

Thanks for the kind words. I am reading tihs after dropping my PFO hood in the tank twice. Luckily, the glass has been removed and there is nothing connected. Else, I'd not be typing....

Is there an IQ test for staying in this forum? As Groucho Marx said, "I don't want to part of any club that'll have me as a member."

:D

We have all done amazingly stupid things were our tank is concerned. The amazing part is that we still do them, even after being in the club for years!

I think you are doing great - keep at it and thanks for the updates!

LOL..I couldn't for the life of me figure out why my Coralife lights with the legs won't sit *outside* the edges of the tank. They sit right on the inner lip..thank goodness for the glass top I have or it could very easily fall in.
Tried adjusting to no avail...finally just contacted them...
Turns out..ummm....   I had purchased the 20" model and my tank is 24"

Much shame and embarassment shall now be delivered down upon me...

A quick question...

My new PFO hood is mounted about ten inches or so from the very top of the lip of the tank. But even at that (little) height, the output of the bulbs is blinding.

Does anyone make a "screen" or a blind", or yes, even a hood that does not have a top? I want to keep the light from the room and in the tank. But mostly out of the room.

Suggestions?

Some folks like to build a "hood" that has no top or back when using hanging fixtures or fixtures that stand-off the top of the tank on legs for this very reason.

It eliminates the glare, but yet doesn't restrict ventilation like a full hood can do. I'm not aware of anything commercially available though - I think you'll have to DIY it...

SGR: I'm running a hood that wraps around the tank but doesn't have a top. Super simple to build; mine is 1x6 pine that I stained and poly'ed. I've attached a picture that describes the basic design. You could also add a 2nd lip that holds a glass cover below the top of the hood and the fixture if desired, just add and another groove and lip. I added cutout for my input plumbing and a lip up top for my lid since I'm running PC lighting for now.

I finished my lighting project. Here is what I did.

1. I spoke to PFO and to the folks at Premium Aquatics. The consensus (and based on some experiments just to confirm) is that I could lower my hood considerably, even on top of the tank itself. I did not go that far, but lowered it from ten inches to about five.

2. I then bought some 1x4 pine and some 1x6 pine and made a box with the 1x6 in front and the 1x4 on the sides. The box does not have a bottom or top, just a high front. It sits on the rim of tank. That leaves about .75 inches between the sides and the hood and a nice big barrier in the front. No glare from the front or sides now.

So, I get the benefit of plenty of lots of ventilation in front, on the sides and in the back, with no glare.

To dissipate the heat of the hood (which seems minimal so far), there's a ceiling fan and air conditioning register about four feet from the tank hood. The exhaust fan points out into a hallway instead of back into the room.

My controls are finished, too. Everything is now maintained by my Mac.
Each MH bulb is on its own control and the two actinics are one control. The hood fans also have their own control, as does each powerhead.
I can volley, cycle, or randomize the four power heads.

Now, all I need is everything.

A quick update. I finally added some life to my display tank. Six Scarlet Hermits, a dozen Astrea snails, and one Green Chromis, which loves to hide. So far, the Margarita snails and the mangrove leaves are all I get to watch. :)

Anyway, I have a few questions:

1/ What is the typical age of an aquarium before corals can be added?

2/ What are the signs that indicate a tank is ready?

3/ Why are Astrea snails so dull? :)

4/ Is there such a thing as too much water flow? Is it possible to over-Powerhead a tank? How to gauge? (Again, for reference, I have a 90 G with four Maxijet 1200s, two per side. I can cycle, randomize, or oscillate in any pattern since they are controlled by a computer program.)
