Some questions:

1) What is some of the required suppliments?

2) Has anyone had them survive under 4x65w PC's for longer than 6 months? (I KNOW MH are the best so dont need to be told that I just want to know about PC's), obviously high up in the tank, on rock work.

3) Is there any compatibility issues with this and anything else?

1) It's common for people to feed smaller specimens by dosing phytoplankton, but other than that, just high intensity light and calcium.

2) I suppose it's possible, although I don't personally know anyone who has done it. Halides are best for T. maxima and T. crocea, but it sounds like you already know this...

3) Certain types of fish will pick at the clam's mantle. If this is happening often enough it will stress the clam and cause problems.

Thanks for the reply Chris,

Ya I know some day some day its a must that MH...I think that day will come when we get settled into a house and build up our dream 200 gal. But for now....Thanks...hopefully if I just put him high enough.

What types of fish will pick at them?
Will blue legged hermit crabs or turbo snails or cleaner shrimp bother him?

Heh, you were a bit too quick for me... ...thought is best to edit my reply since I don't know anyone personally that has had success with Croceas under PCs (although I have read folks claim it online).

Certain angels are know to pick at LPS and claims. There are others too - something to consider when you plan your stocking list....

ehehe I know i just read some places that people have but I did not want to take that with to much credibility.

Ya I have been searching for predators, or compatibility issues and have not come up with much, mostly people talking about placement or lighting with them.

Most reef safe fish should be OK with them - just do a little research on any fish you're thinking about because there are a few, like some of the dwarf angels that can be safe with certain corals, but don't have a great track record with clams/LPS. Some have even had trouble with tangs picking at them.

As for clam predators - pyramid snails are a parasite they suffer from. There are whelks that eat them in the wild too, but they're not normally found in the hobby.

Alright thanks for the info.

Ya I have heard similar info. Ya that Yellow Tang of mine hmmm...he seems to be fine in regards to my anemone's, only thing he gives a hard time is my new royal gramma. Mind you my cleaner shrimp was doing pretty good at stress out my rBTA the other day but thank heavens he figured out whats best for him and buggered off.

So tempting to give it a shot (the clam that is).

So far I think we are not adding anymore fish to the tank perhaps maybe a Bangaii Cardinal someday but that is it. Not until the 200 gal w. some space and then a regal tang, etc. Would luv to get into corals to but ....not until I feel confident on knowing EXACTLY what I am doing and what is required, where to place them, what do they eat, etc etc... I really just need my own person marine biologist to live w. me hehe.

I personally dont think you should mess with a T. Crocea with that kind of lighting. A baby should be fine for a while, just make sure you target feed it ALOT of DT's. With a Crocea or a maxima, without halides I think you are doomed. The bigger my maxima gets on my PC's the larger the gaping is...dunno if this is coincidence with something else, but I am definatley going to have to get some halides..soon. I think you will run into the same problem. I highly doubt a 3 or 4 inch crocea will survive under pc's.

Thanks for the insight Tackett,

Ya gaping isnt good or so I have read, like you said they will want more lighting as they grow.

Hmm shucks...I just feel in love and like a puppy/kitten I wanted to bring it home so bad...but wanted to make sure I was bringing it home to live not die so I thought I would check on here and do some research first. Although the LFS has them under one MH lightening which was way less then whatever wattage we could provide....poor things. That is to bad...jezz I upgrade the lights and everything and still never good enough. True bummer, esp when I just do NOT have the money for those MH's.

Ya i hear ya Tackett.

Just suxs 1) Canada and prices for equipment is beyond reasonable....its a down right rip off--GRrrrrrr 2) Also we just bought new lighting...would hate to just throw them aside and waste money I dont have to waste.

I guess I will just pick up my long face and turn my frown upside and be happy w. my fish/anemone tank for now until someday when we get the bigger tank, and then we will get the metal halides then...

Rather do it right then have the poor thing wither away, glad I came home and researched it first.

I feel your pain, I want MH lights so bad I can taste it...I hate being poor.

Tackett, you can sometimes pick up cheap or free used MH lights from your local police dept's narcotics unit. They seize them from Marijuana grow operations and auction (or destroy them) if they are not needed for evidence.

Holy living crapballs that is a great idea! So many people get busted over here that I bet there are hundreds of the damn things. Will the cops have any idea what Im talking about when I say metal halide? Or will they let me check out their "selection".

I don't know if your locals auction stuff or what as each department is different but yeah they know what MH lighting is. It's worth checking into.

Do a google search for police auctions and your city name. I missed out on a pallet load of Sun Sparc stations last week :( They sold for $25 for a full pallet...about 2 dozen of these *sigh*

You'll definitely find stuff...good luck!

No worries Tackett, man all day I could barely focus at work, kept thinking about that silly clam, how dare he attract me so, and distract me at work. Stupid road blocks w. lights so just not fair....not fair in the least.

I am sure ppl appreciated the tip Lawdawg.
