Anne,

Welcome to the hobby! It does sound like your LFS is not being very good at advice. I have been trying to write little guides to help new tank owners avoid mistakes. I made a list of the top ten pitfalls to avoid, here are #9 and #10:

10. Using a LFS employee as your only information source:
Local Fish Stores are businesses that are out to make a profit. There are basically two types of local fish store owners out there. The first are out there simply to make a profit and are not seriously concerned about you succeeding, in fact if you fail and continue to try they make a lot more profit off you. The second kind is there to truly help you succeed in the hobby and will do their best to help you have a happy experience in the hope you will return to them for additional business. Unfortunately, the second kind is far less likely to be found than the first kind. Until you have been in the saltwater hobby for at least six months to a year, it is unlikely you will be able to tell the difference.

If you are lucky enough to have the second kind near you, also remember that the pay scale for a LFS employee is dismal and most people with years of saltwater experience will be able to find a better pay than being a LFS employee. So you are more than likely to find employees that just don’t know very much. Some of them will have a very strong desire to help you, but their knowledge of the subject will be limited. There is just too much information out there for a low paid LFS employee to know about all of it. If you find a good one in your area, consider yourself very lucky and make sure you support that employee and store so they will remain there to help you.

If you don’t have a good LFS, you can find lots of help on the internet. My favorite two websites are:
http://www.reefcentral.com
http://www.reefs.org

9. LISTENING TO ME
What? But I thought you were giving advice? Let me clarify, don’t listen to ONLY my opinion, or just one person when making a decision. If you ask 10 saltwater reef keepers what their opinion is on a subject you’ll typically get 10-15 different responses. Listen to many people, try to find the average or best opinion you think makes sense and then go with it.

If you want to read the full top 10, follow this link:

Best of luck in your new hobby and research research research!

Brian, I surely agree with #9!! I've been reading, and reading, ad naseum, and am now interested in talking to HUMANS!

I really believe my LFS is genuine in wanting to help me succeed, but they are not consistant in their advice.

I really appreciate your input, and will certainly be around!

I have no idea how David could see that in the first picture but I think he's right after looking at the close-up.

I couldn't see a thing, I'm just good at interpreting things. :D

;) It's those x-ray eyes

And a bit of mind reading - how can he "interpret" the brocoli in the watermelon as Foraminiferans?

I have those in my week old tank also. What are their care requirements?

I wonder about the info I get from LFS also. One way to way to find out is to compare their info with the info on this website.

Thanks guys for your help!

Hey Sailmike!

I'm the original poster and thats when I saw mine pop up. I not sure if they have care other than being in the tank!!

They are hard like the rock its self, and really never change size or shape.

I hope you can get some answers, cause asking opinions here is like pulling teeth.

i have them in my tank also. they came on the live rock. mine havent done a thing in six months. i believe them to be some kind of dead juvinile coral. i dont know the type. i wouldnt worry about them at all. they most likely will not grow or move forever.

I am guessing it requires high levels of calcium and strong water flow to stay alive. Last time I had a tank they all died off. I'd like to try and keep them alive this time, they look cooler than the usual purple coraline algae. I've got a good sized clump of it on my rock about an inch in diameter.

The one real area I'm having a hard time dealing with is, in fact, lighting.

I have a Current USA Satellite 2x65w on my 20H nano and I love it. Not outrageously expensive, either. Might be worth checking out if you are looking for options. :)

They'll just naturally grow in a healthy tank like Spirobidae Worms and Sycon Sponges.

Be carefull when handling live rock with Forams on it. They can easily penetrate skin and can possibly get infected. Gloves help.

Now that's not true! Asking opinions here is more like opening the flood gates of a dam

Anne, is that an "in tank" filter? IF it is, you might really want to check into some other form of filtrartion. I'm haveing a hard time believing that you haven't had any saltcreep with that airstone, because pretty much every one gets saltcreep, with airstone and bubblers it's 100 times worse.

I know you were sent to check out the nano forum, but I really feel that you need to go to the build off and see what is going on in there. No tanks over 20g are allowed. There are several different methods being used, and you will get some GREAT information there on set ups, filtration, lighting and pretty much everything else. It's designed to be a learning tool for beginners and more advanced aquarists, you will get much needed help just by reading.

Hi Boobie!! :D

I'm using that in tank purely for water moving puposes. It has a very adjustable powerhead, and is very smooth.

I'm using a Top Fin 30 for filtration, it hangs over the back of the tank.

Now, as far as salt Creep is concerned, I now realize what we're talking about. The dried salt on the hood!!! Yes, I have a bit, but I'm a SAHM, and I've got a daily maint. routine for all the Aquariums, (3!!) so it never has much of a buildup.

I'm off to the build off!!

Thanks,
Anne
