Hi! I have some live rock sprouting these cute broccoli looking things. They are watermelon color, and very small. They really seemed to popo up overnight a week after getting the LR.

Thanks for any help!

I should mention in the photo they surround the middle hole...

I can't make out what your asking about; are they watermelon color (green like the rind or red like the inside) ? If red they are probably Foraminiferans and green they are probably a species of macro-algae. Can you get a better picture?

Thank you David!

The color is Redish-Purple, like the inside of a dark Watermelon, and I put the name Foraminiferans into Google, and brought up some pics, and I don't see a resemblance. My Things actually have a identifiable stalk, and little fingers that come from the top of that. They honestly look like mini polyps, but I don't think thats wht they are. Course....I've only been at this a couple of months!! Lemme see if I can get the pic better..

Anne

OK This time I circled them...They are very small, but are everywhere! Only on the LR. I hope they grow bigger!

Aptasia?

BTW, that's a lot of bubble in your tank. Is it like this all the time?

I have no idea how David could see that in the first picture but I think he's right after looking at the close-up.

No it's not that one, these ones are hard as a rock!!

And yes, I have a bubble stone behind the live rock. Is it inadvisable? The LFS said Anenome would like it!!

I appreciate any and all constructive critisism!! Thanks!

After using Google Images, I see you (most surely) are right!! I mistook the way you identify these kind of things to be like you would identifiy, say a fish. Even though the color is diffrent, I see how I could think they have stalk, because it looks like they kind of free form.

Thanks again!

I couldn't see a thing, I'm just good at interpreting things. :D

Don't want to be too critical of your LFS's suggestion, but I feel you may want to get second opinion on many thing your LFS says, especially if you want to buy an anemone for your tank.

Bubbles cause a big mess called salt creep. If you can handle the mess and you like the bubbles I don't see anything wrong with them. The mess must be cleaned often though because it can cause water to wick out of the tank and that can be dangerous.

The bubbles have no useful application for Anemone in my opinion.

I would also postpone the Anemone by a year or so. The documented odds of a new hobbiest keeping an Anemone alive long term are about 1 in 40. Long odds.

Hi Guy!

I really have found no mess at all! My tank is pretty small and I actually have an Anenome already.

I have..
20 Gal tank
11lbs of LR
Florida Pink tip Anenome
Emerald Crab
Flame Scallop
2 Blue legged Hermits
and a Snail.

They have all been co-habitating wonderfully on a diet of Brine shrimp, and this other stuff, Stinky, I can't remember the name of right now.

I feed them every other-two days, and the only mess I've really encountered was a bloom of some sort on the glass. I bought a Mag float for that.

I actually don't know my lighting..Can I look right on it for info?

BTW..Why do you feel I shoud get rid of the stone? Guy from above feels it's a non-issue if I don't mind 'Salt Creep', but I've yet to see that.

Love your input!

Uh oh. Is that the stock lighting that came withthe tank? If so, your anemone will perish. They require very intense lighting and the stock lighting that comes with standard tanks is insufficient.

First thing you'll find in the hobby is that it's not an exact science and typically there's no single "right way".

Just be aware that most new hobbiests ask questions until they get an answer they like instead of asking questions until they understand the answers.

Haitian Anemone are not as light demanding as "Hosting Anemone" but they still require quite a bit. I'm beginning to suspect that your LFS isn't handing you the best of advice.

I'm not searching for an answer, I'm asking your personal opinion. I've not spoken to any one other than LFS, so all input is cherished to me.

As for the anenome, I've seen it through a couple 'Waste Cycles' and am currently hypnotized by it's feeding method!!

The one real area I'm having a hard time dealing with is, in fact, lighting. There are a million schools of thought on this, and my size tank is not the norm, apparantly.

Again, Thanks for input.

20 gallon tanks are common. Have you tried perusing the Nano Forum? There are some awesome setups there and a lot of lighting options.
