that was real cute with the Kent patience. looking to get some clowns,. hippo tang, yellow tang and pretty much what my 4 year old daughter, who has really bonded with me in this hobby would like. but her associtaion with it is the nemo movie and i am trying to expalin that not all species might get along. have been placing my faith in steve over at the ww of fish and he has helped tremendously. i live near fishtown but keep seeing dead things floating around being fed on in their and think i might be asking for trouble introduce mistreated animals into what i am spending every available hour trying to complete. foundout quick that glass is better than acrylic.:irked: now at least i have rocks and scratches to stare at, keep you posted and again love this community.

also quick question about the qt tank. i am so heavily invested in this project now and know i should set one up and hopefully will soon. but in my readings since i want to start with clowns what do i do if some ich would develop. i know of the copper (not without qt), reefex (don;t think it would be smart with acrylic as it turns silicon blue on glass tanks), and the garlic which seems good as it is natural but won;t kill the ich. how about fresh water dips and cleaner shrimp? and what is the correct way for the freshwater dip. just in case i know i had to fight this stuff in a cichlid tank which would have made the perfect qt but had to get rid of the fish too. ( 4 year old needed to have an adoption process), what size tank and what would be the least costly setup for now.

I see you want a couple of tangs - I have found that it best to introduce them all at the same time therefor avoiding the usual territorial wars.;)

For the qt you can use just about any tank size. But if I were you I would set up the largest size you can easily accomodate as not all fish will fit in a 10 gallon. All is needed is a tank (or anything even a bin), heater, power head, thermometer and an inexpensive hang on filter.
I find that copper is the best way to go in treating ick. Garlic every other day to keep the fish's immune system up to war off the little buggers. As well as good stable water parameters.;)

i was adding a pinch of fish flake for the ammonia content and i had a huge growth spurt of brown stuff all over the rocks. took a little off and sucked it out. now it has returned and seems to be spreading. is this a normal part of the cycle or should i continue to stay up nights?

ammonia in tap water

ok so here is something i would never find out unless i beqan this hobby.
checking the parameters of the tank and things seemed to be coming to a constant except the ammonia was at .25 on a seatest scale. i though for the hell of it let me check the tap. got the same reading from the fridge water (runs through two filters) , the kitchen sink and the backyard spigot. all the same. now if i have food in the tank for the cycling being decompose that means the same **** is in my tap water. call 311 and they gave me a complaint number for someone to test the water. had eddie over at ww of fish test the tap and came up with the same thing. wife has been complaing of the taste of the water latly while they were doing street construction in the street. so i will use this to my advantage to get an ro/di with the clearance from the queen.lol which is a good model for ro/di for both the tank and drinking waterwas thinking of calling the filter guys tomorrow to find out more but you guys always seem to be there. thanks in advance.

We have great vendors on this site. You should try Air, Water, Ice and Buckeye Field Supply. They both carry what you need and are supporters of MR.

thanks but i am even more puzzled now. took an ammonia reading from some distilled water .25, bottled water .25, tap from my fridge 2 carbon filters .25, staright tap .25 fish tank after while i was cycling .25, nutri sea water .25 i have yet to see a yellow color on this kit at all to coincide with the color chart. don;t think i am too screwed up to mess up 3ml, 11 drops of a, 4 drops of b and 4 drops of c and wait 15 minutes. if i am god help the fish
using red sea marine lab kit
got the dep in bayside comoing to give me some numbers once they check the area in their lab. thought distilled was pure. especially nutrisea
any thoughts aside that i am a complete idiot

Try a new test kit. You could have an expired or just bad kit. If every single test you do with the kit comes back with the same reading, I'd say at least get a buddy to do a test with a different brand before you shell out the bucks to buy one for yourself. If you're coming to the swap, bring a water sample from a couple of different sources and if you LMK that you'll be doing that, I'll bring an ammonia test kit to see what we get.

thanks when and where is this swap going on. would love to try to make it. the test is brand new i bought it a couple of months ago when i bought the used tank. there was an old kit from the previous owner which has little packets in it and that came back as 0 ammonia but don't know if i would trust them due to the unknown age of the chem. either way i think it would be in my best interest to get a kit anyway as my daughter is now extremely attached to the tank and the "nemo" characters in there. love that this has brought us away from the tv and enjoying this wonderful hobby.the dep will be sending me a report of the local water supply but i am not willing to trust all their numbers either as they already told me the check for ph which would show a presence of ammonia. either way since this is such a CRITICAL issue i better move on it soon but thanks for the offer again.

i got the corals from the guy who i bought the used tanks from. i see some at that fishtown joint over here but they are looking for over a hundred for each piece. i am toying with the idea of taking them out as the tank fills up and adding more live rock. but not sure yet would definitely post them here if i do cause everyone has been so great.kinda where i am at now although i just lost one snail wedged himself between one of the corals and a power head couldn;t move any more. any suggestions would be great
