I am setting up a 75 gallon tank with a 40 gallon sump. The tank is not reef ready and will use a HOB overflow. The sump will be a modifies acrylic tank that measures 48 long X 13 wide X 16 high. I would appreciate suggestions on how best to compartmentalize this tank. Also, what would be the best skimmer? In sump skimmer or external? Live rock vs DSB, or both? I am attaching pictures of the tank I want to use for the sump. By biggest issues with modifying the sump are the divider in the tank and the 3 to 6 inch lip around the top. Thanks in advance for the input.

I would go with three baffles as well, Skimmer hard to say really depends on what you are looking to spend on quality I myself always like external. Then live rock vs DSB I would do both but what do you plan on keeping? Are you going into a reef tank or are you a complete newbie to saltwater?

This will be a reef system. I figure that at the end of the day it will hold about 100 gallons of water. I currently have a 55 gallon reef tank with a small wet/dry type of filter. I'm not a total newbie but still have a heck of a lot to learn about this part of the aquarium hobby. Right now, I'm just fishing for some ideas and will use this thread to track the progress of this system.

Here's an update on the tank. I started moving the rocks from my 55 gallon. Sump is up and running. I will be going with DSB system. The skimmer is an Octopus Xtreme 200. I'll post more pictures as it comes along. These were taken about a week ago.

Looking good you did a very good job on the sump; what is that in the center of the tank? what kind of lighting are you going to use?

If you're talking about the rock in the center of the tank, I'm wondering what it is too. My idea is that it's texas holey rock or one of those really dense rocks used for freshwater setups and if it is, I'd take it out if it was me just an opinion.

The rock in the center of the tank is one of those "rainbow rock" used in freshwater. I have a small crate full of these rocks from my African Cichlid days. My wife wanted it in but it's out now.

As for lighting I will be using a Coralife 2X250 MH with (2) PC actinics. The sump will just have a 20 PC lighting system.

I have completed the moving the contents from my 55 gallon setup to the new 75 gallon. It's amazing how much more room there is. I have gone with a DSB in both the DT and sump. I also put a bunch of live rubble into the sump. I'm hoping that since much of what is in this tank came from an existing tank that it will mitigate some of the early cycling issues with a tank. If not, I'll be doing a lot of extra water changes for a while.
