Recently set up my RODI unit and it has been working fine......
When I ran it initially the tds showed 6 or 7 after the RO...after that the unit stabilized to 1 or 2 total tds before going to the RO....for the past couple of weeks it is at 0 tds after the RO.
Now I know that it is not recommended to drink water that has gone thru the DI....becuz 0 tds water can ( arguably) be harmful.....
But my water is at 0 tds just out of the RO....should we be using it for drinking water or not????

Yes it is safe to drink ,you must run the TFC for a minimum of 50 gal first .I've been using it for many years ,it might be cleaner than bottled water from the supermarket.

It will remove minerals from your body. But the big question is, is that property safer than the chemicals that are currently in municipal water sources?
I think so.

There is a difference between ro and rodi. I drank ro water for years on boats and the taste is far better. I don't know if I would drink rodi water like that.
I hooked up a high flow carbon filter to my kitchen cold water supply for under $80. It took an hour with home depot supplies. Tastes just as good and no worries.

No, there's no problem drinking RO/DI water. If you were a small fish, dropping you in it might cause problems, but large organisms (like people) won't suffer any ill effects. If you've ever drunk distilled water, bottled, from a grocery store, you've drunk 0 tds water, likely even more pure than what you get from your RO/DI as distillation also removes nonionic compounds.

Right, that is the cause of some concern. Pure 0 TDS water will remove elements from the body. Just like fish, people need trace elements and some of this is from the water we drink. Distilled water is not good to drink continually. It causes stomach aches in some people after a while.

RODI water is not great to drink. Unless you're a marathon runner or voracious aerobic athlete, there shouldn't be any major problems though.

If you're in the middle of running long distances, participate in heavy exercise or are ill with diarrhea and vomiting and drink of RODI water, it can be hazardous to your health. What happens is that your body depletes excessive amounts of electrolytes through your sweat (or other bodily fluids as explained above). Drinking RODI water does the exact opposite of replenishing this ionic imbalance (conversely to drinking Gatorade which replenishes electrolytes) and depletes even more electrolytes. In short this can lead to dehydration and worse, a lot worse.

+1 to master swimmer. My understanding is the cleaner the water gets (demineralized) the stronger of a "solvent" it becomes. If you drink this, it will probably suck all the nutrients out of your body instead of keeping your hydrated.

If you have a glass it wont kill you, but I would not drink it for an extended amount of time.

I would like to follow up on that last comment. Using "Pure Water" for cooking sucks the nutrients from the food.

Companies who use RO/DI or Distilled Water for food or drinks use this as a backbone to their ingredients. For example, I am sure Gatorade uses "Pure Water" to make gatorade, not tap water. They take this "Pure Water" and mix in nutrients, electrolytes vitamins and so on. I assume they do this for control reasons to limit VOC's and Flouride (in some places).

Also, to note, when you add your salt mix, you are adding "nutrients" in the form of salts which will dissolve in water. Salts are just simple terms for compounds that are neutralized from an acid or base. These acids and bases can be nutrients. (Vitamin C is Ascorbate in salt form)

Some people who live in areas who dont have good Tap Water may prefer to use filtered water, but if you ask me, a simple Brita Carbon Filter will do the job. That will get rid of the organics, and it will also allow the water to dechlorinate (if chlorinated).

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, "Distilled water, being essentially mineral-free, is very aggressive, in that it tends to dissolve substances with which it is in contact. Notably, carbon dioxide from the air is rapidly absorbed, making the water acidic and even more aggressive. Many metals are dissolved by distilled water."
