The only mag addition that has been shown to effect bryopsis is Tech M. Raising Mg with other Mg doesn't kill the bryopsis. The reasons why Tech M appears to work is unknown.

I'll second this. I've read about this on RC, and used Tech M on my nano tank with great success.

There are dangers with Mg around 1600 - some corals react badly and can die, and Mg can have an anesthetic effect on mollusks. Also, there are reports of the bryopsis coming back after the levels have been reduced.

My wife and I have read that high levels of Mg are very hard on all the inverts in the tank as well, and that Tech M has some kind of additive that actually kills the bryopsis. I cannot seem to find anyone who can tell me for sure what it is about Tech M that does the job, just that it works. ?????

I don't think we know. It may be a secret ingredient. Who knows...

It doesn't kill them all at once (like fwe does to flat worms). They just seem to recede slowly.

Thanks for the info Keith.

I'm just too scared to bring up my Mg levels that high.

I mean for one, I don't even dose magnesium.

Two.. my "nano" is really, really small - 6 gallons.

I'm going to pick up an emerald crab or two this coming week. And I'll see how it goes. Hopefully I can find a store with a good return policy haha.. just incase the crab(s) start having a feast w/ my coral.

The tank I was dealing with was a 12G nano.

I have emeralds. They didn't touch the bryopsis. You have to keep them really well fed. I would not attempt two emeralds in your tank.

And besides lookn and inspecting the coral that goes into your tank... what is a good preventative measure which can be taken to eliminate the chance of any reef pest such as bryopsis, etc.

I read about this solution called revive... any good?

Revive will not kill algae... Its only good for pests. Best way is manual removal or depending on what coral you can do a peroxide dip but you must be super careful.

Got an emerald crab over the weekend.

Within 3 minutes of dropping him into the tank, he started munching away at bryopsis.. haha.

Guess I got lucky or something?

Anyway though, I have a HUGE out break (will post up pics when I get home from work).

But I highly doubt this one crab will really put a dent in my bryopsis problem. I finally got on nano-reef.com and read up on a ton of bryopsis threads. There seems to be a 100% success rate when dosing Kent Tech M. Majority of the people dosing their tanks with this Kent Mg supplement had small tanks, similar to mine 10g and less. So I think I'll pick up some Kent M.. hopefully it'll do the trick. However I must get a Mg test kit...

just rember you are not dosing cal and alk so the mag will be higher then the both of them. the mag is what keeps them together in a ballance. Buy a saliferd or elos test kit I know gothem has them for dam good prices.

Purchased Kent Tech M today...

Didn't dose anything yet. Will start dosing tomorrow.

What are good increments to attempt to bring up the Mg safely with out making anything in my little system go haywire?

P.S. (I got 2 out of the 3 bulk heads I need to my 46g bowfront... yaay!)
