tanks turning brown!!!

my sand and coral are turning brown as though it was getting sun burned, is this a good thing and if so why?

no pics at moment but my hermits and snails are eating it up and my brother alex said its normal thats its just showing its cycle, all is well i guess

u shouldnt have any living things in there until after the cycle.

it has cycled, though i had all tests done and the ammonia peaked and all is in order and all my livestock is doing very well maybe its my light thats too high i have it at 50 percent maybe i will lower it, my tank is two months old

thank you very much! i went through a few brown out breaks too lol :shhh: no pics of those posted tho.

i tweaked feedings and light times, and up the WCs cause algae appears when there are excess nutrients in the water.

oh!! realy, well i feed twice a day , maybe i will cut back on that and lower my lighting, im usind led light ting by ai solutions, it has a control so maybe ill do that, my brother told me something along those lines as well, but the snails are in heaven as well as the starfish an hermits lol

yea i used to feed 2x a day, but now its only once and only enough that its all gone in about a minute.

Feeding twice a day is way too much. I feed every other day in 2 sessions if you wanna call it. They get it all before it settles anywhere and are healthy and happy.

Sounds like you are having a diatom outbreak, looks like a blanket of brown algae?- Its not algae though, theyre actually organisms. Its totally normal to go throught that stage as the tank starts to mature. Increase your water changes a bit.

In my eyes cutting back the light cycle unless theyre on for way too long doesnt solve anything- heavier water changes and cutting back feeding, the diatoms will go away on their own.

Youll probably get green hair at some point as well along with small to extreme cyano(red slime) outbreaks as well. Youll get through all of them if you practice good husbandry.

I'd like to add: Are you using RO/DI water, or similar? Check the TDS in the water you are using for top off, and water changes as well. 0 TDS is what you are looking for in the fresh water that you aim to use for your tank.

hey tony whats up bro!? how are ya , im addicted to this site lol im on my phone checking out the new threads, so far the tank is good my livestock is still alive and im makin some good connections out here, and yeah those led light are sick man , i really think they are worth every penny, im gonna take more pics today and post them tonight so if your on , just check em out ill be on late as well.

+1 on the ro question. I had the same issue until I started using ro/di water...after my 1st change it was noticeable. 3 weeks later, it's crystal clear.

on another note, did you make sure that everything else was at 0?
nitrate & phosphate? what kind of filter are you using?
sump, wet/dry, canister, hob???

most of what I've read is diatom outbreak is from high phosphate levels in the water... so maybe test for your phosphates and nitrates and see where you have to go from there.. but water changes w/ ro/di water DEF!
