I recently bought a used G4 Mac and I need some guidance on how to reformat the drive and reinstall the OS. I am PC guy for the last 15 years and is clueless on a MAC platform. There are also few other known problems I like to fix before I reinstall the OS.

My tank is pretty full with SPS corals I can frag in trade for your MAC expertise, including a small purple monster colony that has been growing nicely in my tank. Please PM or Email me with your availability, I am in Mineola.

Thanks.

Oops, let me clarify, I used MACs at home for the last two-three years but never had to mess with any software install or formatting. I can navigate around but have not tried reformat and reinstalls.

Ink, I'll give you a call in about 20 minuets, I am on a conference call right now.

pmui, I am not sure what that means??

Limewire is giong to be your friend

I don't want to start a flame war here so I'll give two alternatives:

1. You can download any mac software you want for free off of Limewire. Most mac users frown on this as by purchasing the software you encourage more mac software to be released.

2. Mac's are now based on BSD. There is an insane plethora of free software that you can use! Open Office is nice, so are some of the new Apple programs that are meant to take the place of MS Office.

Enjoy,

I switched from PCs years and years ago. Everything is easier then you think. The hardest part about switching is getting yourself to stop thinking in terms of windows. Such as "how do I UNINSTALL something?" IN Macs you don't uninstall, you just throw the folder in the trash and the program is gone!!! Yes if you did that on a windows box all hell would break loose. On a mac everything is based on common sense. When you install something, all files are placed inside the programs folder. When you throw the folder away, the program is gone.

Feel free to PM me with any questions or anything.

Fred

I didn't get a chance to reinstall the OS last night because my 40g portable drive wouldn?t work with the MAC to back up my files, the USB port does not power it up :(.

Two hardware question on my dual mirror door:

1. On startup, the MAC makes a system sound that is really loud. I have turned down the speaker volume and restarted it and that was no help.

2. I added a USB 2.0 card and the system will not come out of sleep mode if I have anything plugged into that card.

Anyone know a good MAC help board where a newbie can get some help, I hate tying up a reef board with computer questions .

While it may be good advice, god knows the things I say in private, comments supporting, limewire, shareaza, torrents etc etc in a public forum can and will get this site in trouble You might want to edit that post for the sites sake.

I use apples boards, there are people on there all the time to help you out.
you just have to go through a bunch of menus to get to the help section you need.

also dealmac.com has an area where people ask questions and debate stuff.

somewhere ther is a shareware program to kill the startup noise. a cheap fix is to plug some speakers into the mac, just keep them off at startup.

as for the card it sounds like a bug, you might have to reinstall some of the usb software, I could not tell you what though, ask on one of the boards.
