Mix reef here. I find that it is a bit cumbersome thought. I cannot find the happy medium.
If I keep the water cleaner for the SPS my LPS and zoas do not grow as fast. So I had to compromise my more sensitve sps' colors. However, it has to be mix reef all the way for me.

You cant really have the two. If you do it has to be in a big tank, like a 300g or bigger. The problem with having both is one likes very dirty water (LPS) and the other likes clean water. Sps need P04 of 0.000-0.005 N03 of 0.01-0.08 . Any higher will cause loose of color and slow growth. If you do mix the two you must run carbon.
The way i see it is if you want sps stay all sps. Sps are for experts only. Just cause you can keep 5 or 6 dont mean you can handle a full blown sps tank.

mixed reef at home. nano softies at the office.
i find it's more challenging to find the sweet spot for a mixed reef than a one coral type tank. of course full blown sps is going to require more attention than the lps and softies.

Booooo ,,booooo sps all the way !!!! Lol

I can't pin point what it is about sps tank that i like more then mixed but standing in front of a full blow sps reef I'm just in awe!!! Love the different growth patterns and color variations and watching a frag grow and color up is so gratifying !
Cal reactor set properly and temp controller + kalk top off ur good to go not saying it's easy it's not but for me well worth the time I invest I love every minute of it!!
