I was curious, can sps survive and thrive in low flow areas? a lot of the areas where i have my turbulent flow is pretty much taken up. i just got this really nice colony and the place i like it at, has medium flow nothing crazy, can it thrive like that?

You have to put it there and see if it likes it there. I have a couple of across in low flow areas in my tank and they are doing very good. I also put a monti there and it hated it. Pretty much trial and error.

yea i just cant justify paying that much money for a power head, i have 4 pumps going in the tank right now i cant really fit any more. they are all hydors and 2 are run off a controller maybe i will replace one of the weaker pumps with a stronger one.

I hear you... They can cost $$$
The mp40 are great So maybe try to find a used one...
I owed hydros and will never go back to one for after buying mp's
sps needs great flow so when troth takes over you should keep cutting or results might end not good!! GL buddy

yea i am sure at one point in time there will be one on this tank. for right now i don't have huge colonies taking up so much space, a lot of things are still small frags and growing. hopefully that will buy me some time even though i wouldn't mind a grown out tank :).

The more pumps you have the more heat you are adding to the tank and the more electricity you are using. You could probably replace 2 pumps with one more powerful pump. I like the Tunze pumps.....you can usually find them used at a good price. Flow is definitely important for SPS....some people believe it may even be more important than the type of lighting. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2006/6/aafeature2

well heat is not an inssue in my tank so thats not really one of my concerns, nor is electricity since thats my dads expertise :). but i am totally aware of the importance of flow in the aquarium. and my tank is deff high flow its just some areas are lower flow then others which i would assume all our tanks have spots like that. i put the coral you gave me chris in a medium flow area and so far so good the PE is huge on that coral! so i will keep it there for now unless its health diminishes. thanks for the tips though guys. is it rare to find a used mp40 selling for 250$?

Jarrett dont rule out the mp10 I have 1 mp40 and 2 mp10's on my 120 and I know I could have just got two mp40s but I like the idea of 2 mp10's and I can place them were needed. You can usually find them barely used for around $200. Besides its easier to lay out $200 a few months apart that lay out that $400 for the mp40.

I have great flow in my tank ;)

yea but will the mp10 really be enough added flow to make it worth 200$, i already have 3000 gph alone in the tank with just the power heads. im not questioning you guys i am just trying to justify the fact of spending that on a pump if i even need it lol.

yea but i kind of have random flow on my tank now, youve seen my tank and my sps corals mike, what do you think. i have two of the pumps run off the controller that alternates every 3 minutes, so that creates random flow.
