I always thought sps liked the best water. I have a few peaces of purple bonsi in my tank, at one time they fell over and got stung! It was almost dead I seen a very small sign of life! it was not taking to much tank realestate so I left it alone. the norm for me is I do small water changes each week. and I dose also. its been crazy for the last few weeks, I would say it been about a month since the last water change and about 3 weeks since I dosed just feed the fish once a day.

I have notice that the bonasi has increase in size 2 or 3 times. almost incrused the dead part. does sps like bad water or by feeding the fish once a day improved my water conditions.

SPS like good nutrients and dislike bad nutrients.

The improvement you see with the skipped waterchanges is an indication that there is something in the new water they do not like. This will not last forever if you continue to skip water changes

you must be careful to match temp, salinity, and other parameters. Also you should make sure the container is clean and free from contaminants, etc.

purple bonsi (or at least hybid versions of it) are fairly easy sps to keep and grows fast. but dont let that fool u into neglect your water par. cause it can turn on u overnite.

btw:how about some pics.

I am very new at SPS keeping, but I am going to take a wild shot at a guess here!

My guess would be the stable environment with you not doing the water changes nor adding your additives the environment was constant. But I definitely would not stop water changes, I'd just be a bit more mindful to be certain the new water matches the tank water perfectly.JMO Remember I am brand new at keeping SPS.;)

Pics pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

"SPS" is widely variable and is, frankly, a really crappy way to categorize corals. Gonoporia's an SPS. lol.

Anyway, I'd say that feeding is probably what did it, but not necessarily because you've killed your water parameters. With more food in the tank, the coral's getting more food, both from small chunks of food, fish poo, copoepods, copepod poo, algae, bacteria, and all the other lovely little critters that float through your tank's water and then get snagged by polyps and eaten.

IME Acros and all branching SPS will do great in a tank that is fed well (various foods) but in a tank that is able to export wastes enough to keep the water "low nutrient".

Yup. This is why I like vodka dosing (well, carbon dosing, really;) not only does it suck free nitrogenous and phosphate compounds out of the water, but it turns them direcly into food for everything in the tank.

I never resorted to carbon dosing but I haven't ruled it out or dismissed it. I know lots of guys do it successfully. I just hear about so many guys with so called alk burn (tip recession) I have been turned off to the idea. I have this old school mentality that what goes in must come out. I don't mind doing the extra water change or having a larger than normal skimmer. With this old school method I am able to keep peak colors and I really never lose acros unless I screw something up i.e. I had knee surgery and my tank was 88 degrees for a week :)

Call me crazy buy i think Acros like nutrients

If I told you the nitrate level in this aquarium at times you wouldn't even believe me

not saying it should be your goal to have nitrates in a SPS system
its all about balance
