Ok so now I am thinking of a new plan of action for my 2 40 gallon breeders. I want to put them on shelves and plumb them into one sump. I was thinking of having coral/fish in one (that my friend has and needs to get rid of) and a frag tank in the other. I would run d120 (led) lights but am open to suggestions (this would leave them about 5-6 off the water).

Here is what I was thinking of for shelving:

For sump my friend has a divided 30 gallon I could get or I could pick up another 40 gallon breeder, thoughts?

If I plan to drill what kit or setup would work best? I have seen recommendations for the glass-holes.com kits but wasn't sure if there was something better.

Any recommendations for pumps etc that I might also need?

Lastly anyone near Brooklyn Heights that might be available to help as I am relatively new to all this? My friend has to break down his reef tank within the next month so I hope to have this setup by then (I can take the coral/water/sand to help get it cycled quickly).

While those racks are strong, I would not trust them for a tank. If the bolts loosen for any reason those things do not stay straight. If you want to make something, then you should use wood.

I would not trust any of that stuff. You are not talking about just stacking books. The rack cannot have any movement in it. IMO you will be just looking for trouble with that type of rack. a Bunch of 2X4's and some screws and you will be good to go....

I don't have any tools up here (all my tools are at my house in Philly). Plus I don't know how long I will be in my current apartment. Right now I am here until December but am hoping I will be able to stay longer. Any ideas on what to use or maybe who to contact about having something built? By the way I am in Brooklyn Heights.

Ok montague street boy, first off , those shelves are not designed for the dense weight of a saltwater aquarium, they are made for scattered weights consisting of loose tools, books, and small machinery or simple storage, its a no go for those racks, with a bit of wood from lowes on 3 rd ave you can get a stand built that will hold your tanks without any concern whatsoever! I see your idea , but its not gonna work, i have seen these shelves give way to things lighter than a reef tank!!

I agree with all the above....those metal stands wont have enough support for what your trying do to...i don't think a 10G set up as a reef will be able to hold it up. If you want to have a great set up just go with wood they will have lot more support.

8 lbs per gallon plus the weight of the tank plus the weight of the dand and rock is pretty heavy. I don't know but the rack might not hold.

It would have a 40g tank on each rack so tank + water ~ 400lbs (+ sand / rocks). I am wondering if the wire shelving I post previously might work with plywood on top of the wire to help distribute the weight as the shelves are rated to 1000lbs. That way if I have to move I can easily take it with me.

Yeh or just two reefs I can always put frags on racks or in the fuge but that was the original idea. I really wanted to optimize the space that I had available. So this will give me 100 gallons in a 36x24 footprint and if fish don't get along I can separate them.

I Know you already got this done [YeaYYY for Richie], but just so you know Lowes would have cut all the wood for you, and you would have needed to put it together was a drill/driver, and some screws.;)
