Grates are done, I added pvc legs and raised them high (8") off the bottom so that dc pump with manifold can be installed below the grates, I used 2" pvc reducer that reduces to 3/4" pvc, so i have used 3/4" pvc pipes so that I don't block the flow to sweep under the grates, I put the rock on the grates and i used small to medium pieces of rock and tonga branches to bridge the gap between the grates, I am very happy with the outcome, I kept flat shelves on the front, might want to use for frags on the front and easy access, I am left with 20" x 68" space on the front to grow macro algae and 12" x 68" space on the side for dc pumps to be mounted to blow detritus from the bottom of the sump, I have kept the grates to the other side of the sump where most of my equipment is going to sit. not sure how many pounds of rock i have in the sump but I still have pile of rock left that I can use in frag tank set up and fish quarantine sump... here are some of the pictures

Hey guys, I am having hard time deciding what pump i should as my main return pump, goal is to run 1 pump that will work as main return as well as feed my manifold which run few other items, Goal is to have DC pump, I have used external AC pumps in the past (Reeflo) and they are loud and power hogs. So I want to try DC pump this time, I am not sure which 1 I should use for this build, I want something reliable and with good track records, This piece of equipment will be back bone of my system..

Yes I have that on my list but for that price they don't give GPH, I am looking into Red Dragon Speedy 230w DC Pump which does 6400 gph, but I like to hear little more from other members on what they have been using and what are their feedback... (ecotech, Hydor Seltz, Current USA DC Flow pump etc...

Just came across this thread and...... WOW!! this is one hell of a system your setting up. If not for having a wife I would be doing the same. When this thing is done you should have a stocking party where everyone brings a frag and you give a tour. As far as the pump, I have a EcoTech Vectra L1 in my system, been running for 2 years, its dead silent and rock solid, I have had zero issues with it. You can see and feel the build quality just holding it in your hands, would definitely recommend it but not sure that its enough for a tank of your size. I would use 2 of them, one strictly for the return and the second as a return and to supply your manifold for your gfo, carbon, uv ect. or use the second on a closed loop to tank and branch off to supply the manifold. One benefit to having two pumps is you wont need to run them at 100%, which makes them more efficient also if something ever did go wrong you would still have another pump circulating water. One nice option on the EcoTech is the battery backup.

I would agree with Mooka151 regarding using a second pump. Redundancy is a beautiful thing. If 1 pump fails you will still have flow. Since you are using the pump to feed other parts of your system there is a great amount of dependency you are placing on the 1 pump. Listen, you could install 1 pump and have a spare but....if the pump goes while you are away then all is shut down until you replace it. With the 2 pumps you have built in security to an extent.

I agree with both of you, I think I will have ecotech L1 as my main return pump and second pump as back up and something different to run my other items from manifold. I will post pictures when I get to that part..

Abyzz are awesome pumps, pricey but great. As mentioned before on large systems I like to run two separate return pumps just in case one goes out. Even if running something cheaper like the Jebao 20,000 having a third as backup.
