the system i'm going to end up with is 3x 400watt 14k mh, and 2 blue actinic, and 2 10k daylight. and 2 36" strips of LED moonlights. i figure i won't have to heat that room once all are turned on 8O
i cut off the top of a plastic jar, and shoved it in the sand, then put him in that, and covered the jar top from sight. it loks good and he can't move anywhere
O.K., I'm a little slow. You cut off the top of a plastic jar? Is that the lid part or bottom part? not sure I understand. I have lost 2 of them because they never stay put. Is he under a jar?
ok. some say you can get a nice sized piece of pvc, say, just larger than the anemone's trunk/foot/body..whatever you want to call it, and put the anemone in that then put that in the sand bed and cover the outside from sight. he will feel secure in this and not want to move, and it's virtually impossible for him to move anyhow. i didn't have any pvc that size handy, so i used an empty plastic jar and cut the bottom off and discarded the lid.
That is so cool and cheap! Now the next thing I buy will be an anemone. I have always wanted a red one. I knew I couldn't buy one because it would have been a death sentence. mr x your a wise man, thanks!
lol..well..others say that you should let the anemone roam and find his own place to live, but i don't agree with that. this purple LTA i have stung my mushrooms and they looked pretty ugly for about a week, but then they recovered. i don't want that, nor do i want to have to search for him when i want to see him or feed him.
just make sure you place the "mrX's patented anemone prison" close to a rock ledge or something where if the anemone wants light he can lean outward, and if he has had enough light he can sort of scoot under the rockwork.
my latest brainstorm:
i absolutely hate the stand that came with the used 125 i purchased on ebay. it is home-made and in my opinion, is not quite strong enough to hold the tank.
i discussed this with my boss, and he agreed to help me create a new one out of steel.
i think it came out good. this new stand is overkill for my application, but it is more "user friendly".
BTW, if anyone wants the old wooden stand pictured above, i'll give it to you for free.
ok. update:
i turned the 125 into a reeftank, and the 75 into a FOWLR. also moved both. the whole undertaking took about 4 hours. first i drained the 75 reef and captured all livestock, and put them into bins/buckets.
then removed all rock and put into a bin. then shavo came over and helped with the rest. i made a few rock stacks with wooden dowels as well.
more pics.
the day went very well, and the only problem i had was that i couldn't fit the new asm skimmer into the old 40 gallon sump. i am planning on a bigger one, but it's not in the budget right now.
