hello all.
My name is Doug, and this is my tank, start to finish.
(mr_X is my name on an online FPS game...it kinda stuck)
i chose a different approach then most everyone else: i did everything the absolute cheapest way i could. mainly because i am not rich, and i am very impatient
i will list approximate costs as i go, so maybe at the end, i'll go back and say "crap, i shoulda did it right the first time!"
or maybe i'll say "see, all those guys threw their money away!"
either way...here goes----->

first let me say that i have been a freshwater enthusiast up until now, and i just got downright bored with the hobby. so some friends suggested i give saltwater a try.
so i start with a clean undrilled 75 gallon perfecto, and my old rena xp3 mechanical filter.
i added 2- 20 pound bags of live sand (figi something or other...don't remember) in hindsight, i wish i atleast doubled that.
then live rock, mostly figi, a few pieces at a time.
2 aquaclear "50" powerheads.
now for lighting-- i couldn't bring myself to spend $600 or more for lights so i went as cheap as i could and ended up with
1- 400mh with external ballast and plain-jane reflector, which i thought was 20,000k but it just can't be cause it's yellowish hue tells it's tale. $137.00
1-125watt compact flourescent which was about the same price- $130
and in the existing hood, which housed 2-40 watt basic aquarium bulbs, i put 2 actinic blue bulbs. 15 bucks each i think.
i have enclosed pics of the crazy lights, and the tank, at various stages, algae cycle...rock additions...and i will keep adding as i go, as well as give updates on mechanical components.

by the way, the fuge was a 40 gallon tank which costed me about 60 bucks i think, and the plastic was 20 or so, and the return pump was 30 bucks i think. the return was a 350 gph pump, and the overflow i bought was a 300gph overflow which ran me 60 dollars.
and i needed a tube of aquarium silicone which was 5 bucks or so.
the fuge has some live rock in it, and assorted macroalgae which i got from different LFS's for about 8 bucks a bag :(
i used 2-10 pound bags of miracle mud
http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=94451
and also a 10 pound bag of indo-pacific something or other live sand.

as for critters ..i have:
1 powder brown tang
1 coral beauty
2 green chromis (there used to be 5..where they went i'll never know!)
1 engineer goby
1 tank raised percula clown(or maybe false percula....who knows)
1 lawnmower blenny
1 watchman goby
2 sand sifter stars
a bunch of little hermits
assorted snails
1 skunk cleaner shrimp
1 coral banded shrimp
3 or 4 emerald green crabs
2 small groups of purple mushrooms

here's the fuge as of 10-10.
i got some live rock real cheap and i blindly tossed into the fuge without batting an eye.
as a result, i got a small case of red slime algae.

it's the weekend of 10/15, and i bought some used equiptment.
i ended up with a pretty decent sized wet/dry for the 125, and a red sea berlin HO turbo skimmer, 2 pumps, 1 for the skimmer and one for the return of the sump, and a decent overflow for $210.00
i placed the HO (hang outside) skimmer INSIDE the sump area because i could, and because it was inhaling so much crud and filling the cup so fast i didn't want it to overflow and stink up the place when i wasn't home.

we filled the 125 this weekend and added about 50 pounds of crushed coral (thanks to shavo) and 45 pounds of reef sand.

the wet/dry came filled with bio balls, but i took them out and will be filling that area with live rock rubble.
i will also be adding as much LR to the tank as i can afford.

i forgot to mention: i paid $315.00 for the 125 gallon tank and ugly home-made stand, and 2- 36" single bulb hoods (which will be trashed!).

updated pics of the 125 gallon fish only, and half-breed wet/dry/fugey thing. ultimately, this will be removed and a 55 gallon fugey will be implemented. 8)

i went on ebay and purchased what was advertised as a 20,000 kelvin, 400 watt Mh bulb, for 12 dollars plus 9 dollars s&h. what a deal!
ok..i got it today. i took it out of the box and it turns out it's a 14,000K bulb in a 20k box!
i assume it's just a mistake, since they are most likely the same price.
so i turned it on, and it looks very nice. i just need one more on the other side!
