My old website died and took all the old pictures with it so I figure that's a good enough excuse to start a new thread :biggrin:


I'll try to add more stuff here in the weeks to come, but most of it's on my new website . . . be sure to come over to the blog and leave me some comments and feedback. Plus I'm looking for some web specialists to help me setup up live video and data feeds to the website so I can check up on my tank while I'm away and also so I can share online.

Sorry for not getting together on the LED thing. The evidence was so overwhelming online that I didn't even bother to wait and invested in several varieties myself. I'm truly blown away by the power and look at night. I really appreciate your offer to help view some tanks with LEDs and hope you will forgive me for not following through

Recent change to the lites with the addition of four 48 inch ReefBrite Blue LED strips, but the primary lighting is still four 400 watt Radiums supplemented with four 48 inch T-12 UVL 10000k Aquasun VHOs.

In 2002 I placed the anemone on a smooth rock. In 2003 I used a maxijet pump to pry it off and transfer it to a larger plate shaped rock. In 2007 I moved it again to the rock shown above, but in all those years it never moved on its own except an inch or two, nor have the two clones at Greenwich Aquaria moved either. Not sure if it's something about H. Mags or what, but mine seem to stay put :smile:

Interesting coral recovery story. I think this coral browned initially in response to the introduction of LEDs as an add on to my light system, but I'm glad to see that it is finally recovering slowly!

Beautiful tank. Congrats on Coral Magazine using one of your pics for its photo. When I clicked on this thread and seen the tank and surroundings, I said to my self, "This looks to familiar". Went back to the magazine page by page and there it was on page 53. LOL.......

No. It's the same GC tank, but I'm seriously looking at replacing it soon as I can since the seams are not "perfect" so I have no idea on their life expectancy.

Thanks for the notice! Actually I had 2 photos in the mag and neither tranferred to print all that well. Here's the second which I think you'll agree is much better on a PC

and then today I discovered a revolution in lighting. I bought this on a whim 'cuz it looked too good to be true, but after a week of running it I'm convinced it's for real. Anyone wanting to grow SPS and have the cheapest light out there needs to but on of these:

I first ran the 6500k lamps that are designed for it and it ran 380 watts with an Apogee PAR reading of 550 2 inches below the waters surface. For the last 7 days I've been running a combination of UVL 85 watt V-HO lamps at 340 watts with a PAR reading around 450. No matter how you slice it I'm getting PAR ratings equal to my MH PFO hood at a fraction of the operating cost and a pittance of the purchase cost. The real test is coming now when I put the 6500k lamps back in and see how they color up my frags. Because they only cost $18 each so if they work they are THE "Cat's Meow" when it comes to frag growing!

Do you use kalkwasser ? What exactly is the tank behind the sump for ? Also, do you use any type of mud/sand and macro-algea refugium ? I'm such a pain (Lol), and very curious on how such a healthy invironment is maintained.
