Incredibly Beautiful Tunicates in the Reef Aquarium

Tunicates or Sea Squirts are some of the most interesting organisms I’ve come across in the reef aquarium hobby. They come in an incredibly wide range of colors and shapes. The downside to keeping tunicates is often times they have very specific nutritional requirements that are not well documented. Heck, many of these tunicates are misidentified as sponges, that’s a bad start to understanding their nature. We’ve decided to feed them a combination of different foods and so far, it is working out. I hope these continue to do well in our system because these tunicates look amazing. Sphoeroides dorsalis, Deep-Sea Puffer

Hi friends, I have a little two inch Sphoeroides dorsalis for you all today which is super similar to the shallow water bandtail puffer that I have sent you all more than once. Unlike the bandtail this guy is found very deep, it’s smaller and is much more colorful than it’s shallow swimming cousin. The bandtails were also very grumpy and hated to be photographed much like this little treasure who was very uncooperative from the start making this photo super hard to take. This was once again found miles off the coast of St. Eustatius in the Caribbean by the Smithsonian Institution using a deep-sea submersible from Substation Curacao.

Local Fish Stores – A Vital Part of the Reef Tank Ecosystem

When I first started in this hobby many years ago I frequented a few local fish stores to pick the owners’ brains to better understand how they achieved success with their tanks. They acted like a coach, helping to guide me through any issues or problems I had with the tank, and also served as a source of inspiration. Ok, fast forward to today. Yes, there are many retailers selling a wide variety of corals and fish online but they cannot match the level of service you can get at a LFS. And nothing beats seeing a coral live and in-person when you are in the buy mode. Local Fish Stores – Personalized Service I live in Vermont and in my area there are not a
