The St. Augustine Aquarium is a privately funded project that is scheduled to open in Spring of 2015, with full completion expected in the Summer of 2016. Its core mission is “conservation through education.”
Last week, founders Shawn and Kathy Hiester – avid SCUBA divers – announced the purchase of the future five-acre site for the aquarium. The address for the upcoming aquarium is 2045 State Road 16, St. Augustine, which is approximately four miles east of Florida’s northeast Atlantic coast.
The St. Augustine Aquarium will feature an 80,000 gallon outdoor “Snorkel Adventure” pool plus 180,000 gallons of additional indoor/outdoor marine exhibits showcasing Florida’s reef ecosystems. The main attraction will be the ship-wreck exhibit (photo right) to celebrate St. Augustine’s rich maritime history. There will also be a Zip Line attraction where guests are slid down a rope suspended over St. Augustine Aquarium’s Shark Lagoon exhibit (yes, filled with live sharks).
