Cherry Book Cases

This was a project I did this past summer for Greenwich Aquaria. It's one of my favorite cabinets I've made so far. While not too large I like the simple details in it. It's made of a combination of solid cherry and cherry plywood. The finishing was done by Tony at his shop in brooklyn, I did some of the staining and his finish person sprayed the lacquer on it.

I took photos of most of the build process. I was thinking of posting them to show you how you can make this in a small shop with a modest set of tools.

Frank I got this cherry from Roberts Plywood on long island, but check out M.L Condon
in white plains, they carry a large selection of rough lumber in a lot of species.

I've gotten into building drums
I just did a walnut steam bent shell and I hand rubbed tung oil and buffed it out.
I have a flame maple shell I've been doing I'm going to try waterlox tung it;s supposed to bee rock hard and deep gloss

the walnut has about 20 coats of tung wet sanded netween coats with 600 grit
final started at 600 grit and went up to 2000 grit and hand rubbed with white compound

I waited 24 hours between coats

I haven't decided if I am going to dye the flame maple or just tung it
the grain pops when you wiped it with alcohol

20 coats of oil, that sounds like a lot of sanding, yikes.

really not bad wiped on the tung let it dry
light scuffing with 400 grit before the next coat
wasnt in a hurry so I let it cure between 24 and 48 hours
Walnut has a course grain so it took alot to fill and get smooth
worth the effort too!
the drum sounds as nice as it looks too!
