Marcellina, do not put any restriction (ball valve) on the overflow from your display tank. You ALWAYS want that line as clear and unobstructed as can be.
Going straight down with your overflow and having to use angles on your return is much more effective and less likely to cause a flood. Yes, the pump will more than likely have to be upsized a bit, but that is less of a potential problem than having your overflow run through a 90 degree bend (possible snail or the like getting stuck in the 90).

Otherwise you didn't do a bad job with your schematic. Looks ok.

sump design sounds good you may want to put in a bubble trap so that you dont have a issue with small bubbles in the display tank this can be done by installing 3 baffles 1inch apart this will become the divider between the middle and return pump section. the first and last baffle will be down to the bottom of the tank and the middle baffle will be held off the bottom a few inches. so water goes over the first under the second and over the last.

Ok so after MUCH consideration I decided I wont be setting this tank up. Financial problems, my 30G tank major crash, physical injuries from car accident to take care of, and some other personal stuff.... not a good year for me. Anyway its just not the right time. Im going to be selling this tank setup soon so my loss is going to be someone elses gain. I feel so bad I love the carpentry so much. :(
