don't do this... DON'T DRILL YOUR SUMP UNTILL YOU ARE READY TO PLUMB IT. It worked out for my only because I was working off of perciese CAD plans... still I should have waited so I don't have to work plumbing lines around a fixed point. There was no fudge factor since the holes were drilled and I like fudge :D

Looks nice so far. Have you had an opportunity to scrutinize a Zero Edge tank? Your design is remarkably similar to them. It took them quite a few trial and errors to get the waterfall to flow properly.

Good luck and keep the pix coming.

I was going to say the same thing, the design is very close to the zero edge tanks including the sump. If the concern in the living room was for quiet though, why design waterfalls? Even the vertical falls down the side glass will make noise and anyone who has ever run a zero edge in a room can tell you, the evaporation and subsequent humidity is out of control. They need constant top off.

Hey thank you sir... I appreciate that! i really need to get more updated pics as I have been busy trying to get things fine tuned in the system. I'm glad you got a chance to see it in person and like it. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your photos too.

Great posts... thanks for comenting.

I think if you look at thier tanks you will see many differances to thiers than this design. sure my tank has a waterfall design but its not the main attraction. My tank is a fully functional tank that works. Besides is every race car the same? just because a corvette has a V12 engine does it make it the sae as a firarri? NOPE. I don't think that you can compare my tank to a zero edge just based on one feature IMHO.

You are right though I was concerned about the noise but not the noise that you are refering to. The calm soothing sound of a waterfall is something that I did want but the sound of gurgling water falling through a drain pipe??? nope didn't want that at all. I'm glad to say that there is absolutly little to no sound other than the trickle of the water over the sides of the tank. As for the evaporation its not as bad as you describe. I get about 4 gallons of evaporation/day right now but then again its been in the 100's around here lately. besides I do have a water top off system that replenishes the water in the system. This is something that was accounted for. as for humidity I don't notice any differance between this tank and any other that I've had in the past.

Thanks for your comment. I have seen the tanks but haven't studied them. It wasn't what I was after... as for the design on the waterfalls, I used waterfall calculations and tables to figure out proper flow and size up the proper pumps needed for the system. The hardest thing that I had to deal with was properly designing the water spigot with the overflowing walls. this was a challenge particularly because I needed far less flow through the spigot (water delivery system) and the overflowing walls (water exit system). there is only two solutions to make the two balance out. either make the spigot smaller allowing less water to flow through it or make the walls longer. since my walls were nearing 36" long each this was not an option and making the spigot smaller would have killed the look of the spigot. So, I added a piece of acrylic to the spigot to give the apearance of water flowing out of it rather than trickling out (which is actually what is happening. BUT... to answer your question I got it right the first time and thank goodness my math was correct as I would have wasted a bunch of time and money.

Zero edge tanks are nice but are not functional as a full fledged reef from what I've read. Mine is, at least so far :D Particularly the flow in their tanks are far too low to be functional. This tank has a 2100 GPD and a 1700 GPD pump dedicated to circulation so the corals in my tank sway in the current. This was achieved by the drainage system and closed loop as well as the ability to control the flow in and out of the tank at any time through the plumbing system itself.

here is another influence on my designs: This is Frank Lloyd Wrights "falling water" home in Bear run pennsylvania. If you have never been there... GO. Its way better than in pictures. funny thing is that when you are in the living room you can hear the waterfall that the house was built over. Who needs a fish tank in that case? :D
