Lost all of my coraline algae that I had growing on the rock for over 15 years :( I'm bumed about that. However, its starting to grow back so in a few months it should be looking pretty good again. right now its perfect breeding ground for hair algae and other micro-algae.

Beautiful tank, I'd love to know how the algae scraping goes.. It's great that you only did 2 panes please keep us posted and I'll be copying you idea a little with my new set up in the future if all pans out.. Keep up the good work.. I'd be afraid scraping coraline would get annoying from in and out of the tank..

Its really not so bad. You have to decide, if you hate scraping algae than a frshwater tank may be better for you. But then you have to siphon the gravel with those. I don't scrape and never plan to... I whipe down the glass during a feeding once every two days. As long as this is done coraline will not get a chance to grow... hence no scraping. Thats the trick, but we shall see. I will let the back get encrusted, I think.

Nice update! Good move only doing the two side panes.

Thanks, during the design phase I had it where it was only one wall (front wall) overflowing. Then desided against that.

Looks great??

looking good man.
That is one sweet tank!
Thank you!

u already know how i feel about this baby lol
Yes I do. Thanks how is the skimmer situation?

Nice job on the build , just curios how do you have the drains plumed, also do you think you would get more evaporation because of the waterfall.
Thanks...
YUP more water movement = more evap. no way around that. However, I can tell you the top of my water column is nice and oxygenated with zero surface skimmate. Unlike all of my previouse "reef ready" tanks that always accumulated surface sludge. this design beats out even a coast to coast overflow system. anything that collects on the surface goes over the sides immediatly. Thats a nice trade off. But yes I get 4 gallons of evap per 100 gallons a day. I also encourage evaporation cooling via fans. so when I kick on the room AC and maintain temp outside and in the tank evenly there is less evap. An ATO is key to a system like this.

as for the drainage system... Take a look at this thread. You will not be sorry you did. The best system out there, hands down. Beananimals deisgn is incorporated into my system but of course I had to modify the concept due to the unique tank I'm dealing with.

That's looking very plenum-like for starters.

I'm going to assume you mean a plenum filtration system??? The egg crate material has got you thrown off. This is going to be a shallow reef sand bed... approx. 1"-1 1/2" thick. The egg crate is there to keep the bottom 1/2" of sand from shifting.

Personally I am not in favor of plenums for a reef or fresh water tank. I think those systems crash at one point or another.

Many years ago plenum filters had their place in reefing history & progress. I'm not a fan of them anymore either.

The picture with the eggcrate was definitely the one that was reminiscent of a plenum filtration system. I would sooner put the sand (even at 1"-1.5") on the tank bottom without the eggcrate and allow your sand sifters to do their job.
