Many years ago plenum filters had their place in reefing history & progress. I'm not a fan of them anymore either.
The picture with the eggcrate was definitely the one that was reminiscent of a plenum filtration system. I would sooner put the sand (even at 1"-1.5") on the tank bottom without the eggcrate and allow your sand sifters to do their job.

I agree... However, with the amount of flow I have in the tank and the fact that I decided shallow reef early on and the sand being only 1 - 1 1/2" deep... I don't want sand blowing around. The eggcrate helps to keep the sand footing stable with the flow. without it the sand would blow and in certain spots would expose the bare bottom. It is working as intended so far but hope it would not impeade sand growth. From everything I have read about sand beds, all or most of the living bacteria live in the top inch of a sand bed anyway. Moreso a reason to keep the sand from blowing around in the tank.
im ver impressed, tank looks amaizing!! great job! how is the noise? and do you have any pics of your sump in operation? what is your gph on your closed loop system? i really like it!!
Thanks...
Noise is not bad at all... I'm actually pissed my fans are louder than the trickle of the waterfalls.
sump pics to come soon... GPH of the closed loop is 2300 and is a hi-drive pump that is hard plumbed outside the sump. I could not be happier with the pump. it is efficient at 190 watts and super quiet and small for its class. I purchased two other pumps befor settling on the hi-drives. The main circ pump is a seperate pump rated at 1700 GPH, that one handles the return from the sump, waterfall overflow and two media reactors all plumbed off of a main riser line. There is also a built in water changing plug and cepex valve for control.
