If it's show quality that you are looking for, then drilling the tank is the only option
Overflow box (which is how water gets from the display tank to the sump) is practical, but isn't asthetically pleasing and can be noisy. Trying to rig a system that may or may not work properly, and may also flood your house. Hmmmm... The canister filter can work, but is it really worth the trouble. I talked to a member recently that had total failure and flooded his house, $95,000 later and he's still not back to 100%. And that was from 150g tank.
