What happened to Aquarium Village

I had great experience with AV and its great dealing with Andy and Rich. I have almost 40 fish in my tank and half of them are from them.

The owner and employees are great at AV, but that's not the point. I believe what everyone is saying is that any LFS should not sell sickly fish. I agree that individuals should quarantine there own fish, but selling a sickly fish is always unacceptable and AV amongst other large stores do it frequently.

Don't think anyone expects it to be perfect, all the time. OP is commenting on his latest experience, which i'd have to agree with. That biz will surely suffer if Rocco is gone. Hope Andy gets the reins, there might be hope, but still a good man down

Sick fish is part of the hobby unfortunately, it is best to QT if you can.

Is Aquarium Village the one that moved across the street sometime last summer? If yes then I love that store, My friends and I go all the way from Brooklyn to shop there. The store is clean, the prices are much more reasonable that what I find in manhattan.

I got a couple of boxes of reef crystals there a couple of months ago for $38 a box. I find the store well lit and clean.

I'm seeing this issue with sick fish at fish stores come up more and more. That's probably why as part of their renovation, Manhattan Aquariums is now going to quarantine all new fish in the basement before offering them for sale.

I disagree.

1) I think it is ridiculous that you use the word bash to try and trivialize peoples opinions. Is yelp a bashing site?

2) Aren't local reefing forums to discuss local reefing? Tuff luck if you don't like what people have to say, this site allows for differing opinions, which is what is given.

3) Lots of people said that AV is a great place, not bashing them.

4) While I was disappointed in what I saw, I learned that AV hit a bump in the road with their staff. This is something I understand and am willing to go back this weekend and hopefully they would have got everything back in order. This is something I wouldn't have known about unless I started this thread.

5) You sound like a baby demanding a thread is shut because you don't like it.

+1 i agree it s interesting to hear/read/see feedback from other MR on vendors

Maybe AV/owner and other LSF are not aware of whats going on in there store and hopefully if they read these thread they can make some changes.
Buying fish, corals, etc. is just like buying grocery, will anyone go to a grocery store where there produce are horrible, rotten, spoil, etc. I think not!

I have purchase numerous things from AV and i have to admit when they 1st open at the new location across from the source mall they were on point with everything but lately ive notice there tanks were not up to par like before.

hopeful threads can help our LFS out in being more successful!

I do agree with you that everyone has an optinion, but many of these I don't like this or that about a store are usually started by people who had a beef or a competitor. If your neither than I stand corrected, but also along those grounds which should be considered is the creditability of the source of this optinion and coming from someone who has been here two years with no friends and no reefer rating ...nuff said and that's my opinion.

themeat...I was a loyal customer to that store for many years long before any of these others LFS were in existence and bought my tank there in '89, but I evolved into more of an SPS guy and they don't carry them....and here is my opinion, their prices are ridiculously high on dry goods, but I never started a thread about it because people can go and make their own judgements, and more importantly they are not a sponsor here...

MikeNY, i too was a loyal customer there. Ever since i moved to the area, about 14 years ago. When Scott owned it it was something. The place where hobbyists would gather and shot the breeze, exchange ideas. Now it's painful to go in there and see what it has become. I would rather support a local biz, but after years of being ripped off, lied to, and watching livestock die, i just can't. The last time i went in there, about a year ago, i bought a frag and some ro water because i needed a membrane. He wanted $75 for a membrane that was covered in dust so i said lol, no thanx. When i got home, for sh!ts n giggles tested the water the frag came in. Was shocked at his nitrate and phosphate levels. Surprised his coral doesn't instantly melt away. So that led me to test the ro water i just bought from him. It read nearly 200 tds. Needless to say the frag started to shrivel up and die. About a week later i went in to tell him, not to get a refund, just to tell him, and once again it was another....you must be wrong, with some nasty anger thrown in for good measure. That was the last time i was going to eat his sh!t. See ya.
In closing, while i agree some ppl like to bash, especially on the internet where you have no face or accountability. And a sponsor, one of which makes this place available and free for the rest of us, should enjoy a certain level of respect. At the same time this place is about fellow hobbyists exchanging ideas and experiences, so lfs, sponsor or not, should be expected to be a part of that discussion. Unless you'r in North Korea. Would think a sponsor would know that full well when they join.

I hope this place doesnt become like RC and start removing threads and banning members. I go to AV from time to time and yes sometimes their tanks look really bad. Sometimes their tanks look great. Every store has its thing and this is why I try and hit all of them. Not easy running a business. If I dont like what I see I leave.

i buy ESV salt and some frozen foods from them because of the good prices but i dont think i would ever buy fish from them. i have been in the store 5-6 times over the past 6 months or so and i'll take a walk around and notice multiple dead fish in their tanks every time.

Clasystems that's exactly how I feel about all the lfs sometimes u go in and they don't have much other times u find a great deal or a bizzare fish but bottom line the more lfs around the better for us
AV is down the block from me I'm there all the time and feel lucky to have them so close they stock more dry goods then any store I've ever seen and can get any equipment for good deals if u talk to them I also visit a few other lfs by me regularly
