Hmmm I shop at Petco all the time too... in my (extremely) humble opinion, the Petco in Union Square does get some cool saltwater fish and inverts once in a while - while they are nothing like New World Aquarium or something, quite frankly I would much rather pay $15 for a Clownfish than $30 from NWA - and all my fish are from Petco (and so are my inverts), and they're all doing great. Of course, this is just my opinion.

while petco is not the best with marine life they do offer space for homeless cats in some of their stores. I go to the one in union square all the time. I won't buy fish there but I do buy frozen food, and cat stuff.

:sigh: :sad2:

maybe these fish will be better off never setting a fin near one of the
petco store tanks. I have to believe they will be shipped from the suppliers
or one location.

I'm thinking the same thing...The fish are probably better off getting shipped from suppliers to our house instead of going to a Petco...

I think it is a responsible move for Petco, would even be better if they made marine life internet order only and didn't attempt to sell in stores.

they will probably be coming from the same place Foster and Smith, Reefermadness, etc ships from...

for example Foster and Smith is based in Wisconsin but ships from the warehouse on the West Coast. Reefermadness is in CO but also ships from a warehouse on the West Coast. Companies lease spaces in the warehouses where marine life comes in and ship directly from there. Petco could be shipping the same quality fish that you would get anywhere else if that were the case.

And it would be much better than attempting to sell in their stores w/ poorly trained HS kids who don't really care about the health of the animals in many cases.

Of course I am speculating on how they will run the business, but the whole leasing a space in the west coast warehouse thing is common practice.

one thing that I live about Dr. Foster/Smith/Liveaquaria is that they are aquaculturing corals now and selling them, complete w/ certificates stating that they are 100% man-cultured, not collected. That's a really cool business move. I bought a great green apple monti from their aquacultured stock, and it's doing well so far. According to the mailing labels, it shipped from their aquaculturing site in Wisconsin, not the west coast, so I believe their claims even more.
